You do know we changed the name like 2 years ago....right?
No idea what your talking about mate. [quote:e0581]how are you liking the d50 tgb?[/quote:e0581] Im liking it so far - alot. The previous camera I had was a Canon A75 (which I thought performed very well), and has lasted me a long while, but I felt that it was time to step it up, what with the limits that I was seeing in some photos I had tried to take. Shit that I never thought could be pulled out of a scene, Im able to do with this camera, and I think I grabbed some really fabulous pictures from our trip to Salt Point Park; again photos I wouldnt have even bothered attempting to get with the A75 - but Im sure that fact is obvious to this group. Cameras light to me (or should be to anyone not with brittle bones) - came with the standard lens, so while I could get a nice shot of the bannana slug up in the tree - getting a picture of the hawk in a couple of my coast pictures was a no-go. I think I might be getting a Telephoto/Macro lens on the cheap in a couple days though. Definitely am getting an IR filter before my trip to Japan. Technically speaking, my knowledge about "apetures" and "shutterspeeds" are limited, and Im reading up on it so that I can go beyond "point and shooting" to grab some great shots - so that learning curve is definitely there, but it doesnt feel like a "Haha - dont know about photography - fuck you, you cant use me!". I grabbed Understanding Exposure, and read that on the way up there, and alot of stuff Ive seen (with the A75) is becoming clear to me, and Im seeing that - based on F's and Shutter Speeds, I can do a lot more with this camera. My only nigglers is that theres no auto B&W mode and sometimes I cant take a shot. Someone on the trip told me I needed to shoot in NEF if I wanted to be able to properly adjust the B&W on some of these photos - so Ill just do that in the future for B&W shots I want. I also dont know why, but if the Viewfinders in focus (indicated by a lil dot), sometimes itll still refuse to take a shot (and not give you the A-Ok beep). I have yet to figure out why this is, and the manual isnt all that hot. |
yeah i took me awhile before i really properly understood apt. and shutterspeed; but my highschool photography class helped alot. once you get a grasp of what's going on everything infront of you becomes a playground.
when you're having problems with the autofocus, what mode are you shooting in (manual, auto, etc.)? in terms of b&w i use a photoshop action i downloaded off the net. it works great and gives me a large scale of tonal differences. i'll shoot you a pm with it in the near future. nef can become a hassle hsooting as with raw, jpg works fine for me and it's the easiest to work with. usually raw and nef require plug ins and sometimes special nikon software to edit. ir filters are awesome but they can be a bit of novelty. they produce amazing images that rae unlike any other but it's a bitch to get a proper ir shot. you should grab a uv filter if you haven't; they're great just for protecting the glass on the end of your lens and won't affect the shot itself. japan... lucky bastard. |

Im thinking of taking a Photography class next semester. Quick couple of units (which I need), and would help to get an "academic" introduction after messing around on my own for a good while. [quote:afb55] when you're having problems with the autofocus, what mode are you shooting in (manual, auto, etc.)? [/quote:afb55] Didnt think of that. Ill try that. Cant recreate the shots it was happening on, but might be able to do the conditions. [/quote:afb55] Id appreciate that - beer: Tons of photos I took where I was wishing I had a quickie B&W option on this thing (and for the life of me I cant see why there isnt one). Yea I didnt want to shoot many RAW files - they were large as hell, and drained my battery but good. Plus, I cant tell the difference when I resize them anyway. As for the filter, yea alot of it does look gimmicky - but Id like some IR shots for my own personal stash - especially if I can get one at a non-crazy-ass price. If not Ill just settle for the tele/macro lens (which Id rather have honestly). Ill post some pictures in a minute. |

Im learning as i go, i dont have enough schedule time to take any photo classes or else i would...so everything i know about my camera and its functions is by trial and error...and reading the manual and asking around.

the sky and rock ones are excellent. great job.
what lens do you use on your d50? |
Yea. . .those are the best (well theres more shots but theyre "boring" (not to me at least) shots of plants and whatnot) out of about 600 I took before my camera took a shit in the middle of nowhere. Good thing though, because our professor told me her nikon got jacked - D200 - and that shes gonna give me the battery the thieves didnt take.
I agree though, the sky pictures are more dynamic. . . Plus the Jew is hot. I just use the one that came with it. Im trying to negotiate my way into a 55-200, or if I get ridiculously lucky an 18-200mm lens for 100 bucks. ed: |
got some nice shots there teeg

nice shots, i like the crop on the girly girl; sky and rock shots are well done too happy:
the 18-200 is a good lens, my brother has the sigma 18-200 and it's pretty much all/you'll need for cheap. in terms of your autofocusing problem, try this. it works in both manual and auto modes. go to menu and go to the pencil on the left tab. you'll see 01. beep (on/off) 02. autofocus (AF-S/AF-C) 03. af-area mode (single area/dynamic area/closest subject) 04. af assist use the directional pad to flip through and change settings. in 02. autofocus there's two settings AF-S (single focus) and AF-C (continuous). single focus will only focus in on once and once it does find it's focus, it stays with it. if the camera can't focus it wont let you shoot the shot. continuous is just simply holding down the shutter half way and the autofocus will continuously hunt for the focusing point. i find this is best for a few reasons. one it's continuous, whatever you keep it on will be in focus to the best of the camera's ability and if you decide to focus on a subject and move it yet you want to lock the focus on that subject just hold down the ae-l/af-l button; it will lock the focus on whatever subject you first focused on. secondly 03. af-area mode. i find dynamic area is the best as it allows you to use the directional pad and select the area you want the camera to focus on. closest subject is just inane i feel, and single area doesn't have the freedom of dynamic area. hope this helps your autofocus problem. |

I've used film cameras my whole life, starting with my mom's old Canon EOS RebelX about 10 years ago. I've been toying with the idea of a DSLR, and the good things that come from owning one. I really want D series Nikon, like D70, D80 or D200 (none of which I would be able to afford until later) but I'm not sure about the merits of the DSLR apposed to a regular film SLR.
|
Ok well the 18-200MM didnt pan out, but a guy is selling a Sigma 70-300MM for 50 bucks. Used it with his Nikon n6006.
In the words of Howie Mandel - Deal, or No Deal? |
is it a digital slr lens or an old film lens?
|
It is the Sigma AF 75-300mm F4.5-5.6 multi-coated. He said he used it on a N6006 (or he didnt actually say, but he is selling it with that and a Tamron 28-105MM), and that it SHOULD work on a Digital Camera. Ill have mine with me so wouldnt I just be able to toss the bastard on and see if it works?
I cant find a lot of resources online for lens help - and it sucks. All these lenses have different identifying letters and uses, and it would be nice to have a site or something that demonstrated or explained what each one does. I understand this increases the focal range, and should thus be able to get better far away and macro shots - but what about the dedicated macro lenses and what not. Thats the info I want to know about. |
sigma 75-300 or 70-300? you've mentioned both.
it sounds like the 70-300 (if this is the one http://www.ephotozine.com/equipment/tes ... est_id=369). it's a good lens but it's cheap, and the quality is reflective of its price. the lens is really soft in the 300 end but it does well with macro and what nots. yeah all the numbers and codings get confusing, but it's basically referring to the grade of the lens. each company has their own specific brandings, like canon's L glass is the highest of the high and Sigma's EX is their best shit, so on and so forth. these forums have some good info http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/ along with awesome reviews. |
I ended up grabbing the lens. Was able to test it out on homeboys N6006 (was very interesting seeing film inside his, a fact I didnt know as I snapped off 5 quick pictures - spank: ), and it seemed to work quite well.
Brought it inside and did some quick tests - much like the first lens, this one is going to take practice. Im still having a little trouble with the "wont take snapshot even though im satisfied with the VF shot" - but thats just me reading over your advice and getting a chance to really try it. Stupid daylight savings time, means I cant get out there and do some testing, but I will tomorrow at work. This is what I came up with, about 4ft away: Scene just thrown together - for my needs and resized down. . .I think it looks sharp (functionality wise, not composition wise). Its the 75 btw - but I guess its more since it was designed for non-digital? Ill do some reading in that forum, see if I can find a manual on this puppy. |

by the way, nice pics.[/quote:033bb] The pictures I like taken are of shit askew, maybe a branch in a gutter or something - I posted those Salt Point pictures on a photog forum and someone called them "mundane" - which I would agree with if I wasnt into shoots like these. [quote:033bb]in terms of your autofocusing problem, try this. [/quote:033bb] This wasnt working for me. . .until I realized that there were TWO parts of the lens that are adjusted - the length and the part on the end. This is why it wasnt working in manual, I guess I was just adjusting the "focal length" and not the "focus piece". Blargh. Learning this thing is like playing a game like Legend Of Zelda - you get to a boss or a part in the world that youre not able to beat/cross, but then you find an item that allows you to go forward. Focus is my "Hook Shot". |
