i think that they are protesting because free trade = lower cost on imported goods. that means that people are going to buy the better imported things. the fact is, many imported goods like cars, electronics and such are better made overseas because the companys over here have the benefit of these import taxes. by making imported goods more expensive, consumers are more likely to buy domestic goods, so domestic manufactureres are less likely to invest in a better product. basically, the people who are protesting are doing so on behalf of their jobs. if there is free trade, the companies they work for will be finished. maybe if heads of corporations decided to invest in more R&D, they wouldnt need to worry about actually competing with foreign companies.

that goes both ways. republicans all got in line to knock clinton for having an affair, they bitched at him and protested him sending troops to Bosnia for 'useless nation building'-quoting newt gengrich- (the exact same thing going on in iraq today), and GW senior raised taxes after promising not to. IMO it isnt the fault of conservatives or democrats, its the fault of old hardliners who have been in power for 30+ years. the cold war is over and we need new people with new ideas.
