and if they do, they're fucking idiots.

My grandmother does, and I know there are thousands if not millions of others who do.

Christian fundamentalists interpret the bible literally word for word.

There are also a SHITLOAD of people who no doubt still believe the world is flat, or is being carried on the back of a giant turtle. . .based on religious texts. Does nothing to denigrate the ACTUAL religion itself.

All that matters - whether it be Chrisitanity, Scientology or Judaism - is the basic tenents of the religion. . .what it expects out of its followers on the base level - not the literal "history" itself.

Because people are idiots.

there was a YTMND on Scientology that said something that those who give money to Scientology (usually it's believers) are allowed to write off their donations on their taxes. However, in some manner, they get to reap the benefits of that money via Scientology. Its something weird, but it basically said that those who are Scientologists are basically cheating taxes.

Just to repeat, I think they say that, but deep down, do not.

How so? There are people willing to kill themselves for their religion. People are very impressionable, especially at a young age. And when people grow up in a very strict religious environment where the bible is taught from parents and community leaders, those people grow up believing exactly what they were taught.

Im catholic and i don't believe in any of that, you'd almost think that kind of thinking all your life is to prepare you for death and make it easier. Far too many holes in religion to really believe in any of it that strongly.

The way religion is though you'd think that was the way of things, you're constantly told about heaven and hell and sinning and what hapens if you do sin, if you took mosta that stuff literally enough you'd spend half your life shitting yourself about going to hell for that fly you swatted 5 years ago. ed:

I don't think i'll ever understand religion that well, its ok when you're a kid and are too young to have much of a clue about it but when you grow older if you're open minded enoug its impossible not to see all the holes in it.

Some people don't like change. If you challenge a lot of people with facts, no matter how factual and obvious they are to us, they can still reject them. See intelligent design. Religion is impossible to disprove because it's all based on faith, which is what makes it so easy for people to believe in.

I believe a lot of people are basically brainwashed into their religion, and that many people do believe they will go to heaven and all that. Their belief system is a way of life for them.

That being said I was raised catholic and went to a catholic school for 13 years and i basically call myself an atheist now.

Depends what aspects of it are impossible to disprove though, the bible tells us were descended from adam and eve, science says otherwise. Theres absoloutely no proof we're descended from 2 people that according to the bible was essentially 1 person, plenty of proof that we evolved from being animals though.

Thats just another one of those things though, do you take it literally and assume adam and eve were human or is adam and eve just a name for something else? Thats probably the kind of argument someone who strongly believed in religion would come back with though.
