You sign up with one of these pay-to-play sites, and then use a newsreader to scan the internets for digital media.

Its essentially a P2P file-sharing set-up, except youre the only person downloading from the other guy, and youre downloading at your ISP's maximum speed, w/o the other guy ever keeping any record of what it is your snatching. New media is available usually minutes/hours after it is dropped to the general public, and the only limit is how much you can actually leech. It isnt trackable, because there are no records kept - the only thing you ISP will see, is that youre using a shitload of bandwidth (if you choose to be one of those 100G a month downloaders).

Of course the drawback is that is that you have to pay for it. Also, my "tastes" run to the esoteric on some items, so I still have to use BT to find shit - but thats rare. Generally if a Newsgroup doesnt have it (alt.binaries.cd.image.playstation2 for example) - its not out there.

Many sites have free trials (Giganews for one) to show you the wonders of the Newsgroup.

So long story short:

Pros: Faster download, more security
Cons: Cost

When AOL closed down the private rooms that allowed folks to download files, this is where I turned to.
