What kind of processor do you have??

If it's a P4, it could be heat related issues.

Most likely though, reformatting and reinstalling would solve your problems.

EDIT: oh yeah, by the way, Having 512 megs of ram and a 1500 meg swap file is pointless. You'll never use it all. And too big of a swap file is inefficient. I'd reduce yours to 750 or less. You wont see a huge improvement or anything though (either way)...increasing the swap file only provides signifigant performance improvements if you have both a small amount of ram (<64mg) and a really full hard drive.

PS...if you decide on a new comp, I'd love to build ya one!

post the answers otherwise everyone is just guessing and if youre stuffing about switching off services and playing with memory settings you dont want that.

1. XP
2. 256 MB RAM PC2100
3. I don't know if this is right but I think it's 384 and 784
4. Can't find this???
5. 1.46 Gig AMD
6. I am unable to finish scanning my HD for errors. I have tried it twice and get the same error both times, "windows was unable to finish scanning C drive for errors".

I am at a loss right now. cry:

So does using Ghost just reload programs, or does it reload all the random files lying around on the HD?

Also, how many disks (CD's) does it take to do that?

Thanks.[/quote:329ea]

What I do is, reformat, reload all the base applications that I would reload every time and partition the HD into 2, C: maybe 8 to 10 gig and D: the rest of the HD. Your OS, your browser of choice, any other applications that you must have to do whatever you do with the PC is loaded on the C: drive. I then Ghost or Image that partition and store the Image on the 2nd partition or you can burn it to a CD. Any games and stuff I load on the PC, I load on the 2nd partition. This keeps the OS partition clean and small.
If you have a problem in the future, you will be able to reolad all your base applications in 20 to 30 minutes and your ready to reload your games and stuff on a clean non-cluttered HD.
This will image or copy all files on the partition, so be smart about the applications you load. If you add new applications to the C: drive and it works perfectly, you can simply create a new image of the partition.
Hope this helps and sorry I got long winded..... freak:

That's what I was afraid of. I had a buddy lose three in less then a year. It seems that the two Compaq PC's I have bought have had HD's with a short life. Can anyone recommend a good HD?

Thanks!

Maxtor or Seagate Barracuda IV (the cuda is practically silent). Make sure you get a 7200 rpm one, and I'd consider holding onto that old one for storage and other things that arent too important!

Bazooka_Joe 08-29-2002 03:00 PM

I don't trust Maxtor. Seagate is #1, Western Digital is 2nd, and believe it or not, but IBM is 3rd.

Thanks for the tips. I am not happy about having to buy a new HD, but dammit, I need my gaming fix right now! mad:
