ED - I've been having problems with my PS2 lately, and seeing as how you know a thing or two about them, I need your advice please.

First of all, I've had my PS2 since January of 2001. Generally it hasn't given me any problems except as of late. It cannot read disks, even the absolute newest ones. I called tech support and they told me to send it in for repair (free of charge aside from shipping). But, after reading what you posted about weak lasers within the PS2, I don't know if I should just trade it in at EB (if they do infact take PS2s with problems), and use the credit to buy a brand new one.

Just look on the back and see what version it is. If its S-30001 or below, you may as well see if your local retailer will take it. If they DO test the machine just let em know the laser is a little weak and you dont want to bother replacing it. Im sure its the laser since you got yours way back when. May as well swap for a new/refurbished Ps2 since the difference would be the cost of laser fixing or shipping.

It's SCPH-3001. I sent an Email to EB regarding the requirements of a trade in, but I haven't recieved a response yet. I'm probably going to trade it in and buy a new one with the store credit I recieve. Does anyone have an estimate on how much store credit I would recieve?

Depends on if they figure theyll just get it refurbised by SONY. If all else fails just sell it on ebay, and neglect to mention the non-reading disc thing. ed:

30001 I mean.. :\

Well - v4 ps2's and down are the ones with weak lasers. HOWEVER! - you COULD have a version 4 even though that model number is for a v5 (this happened to me). Your best bet is just to swap for a refurbished. Make sure you know the model number first. Settle for nothing less than a v7.

Good news. I went to EB yesterday and here's the deal - I get 100 dollars in store credit if I trade in my Playstation (broken even), its cords, and a controller. Seeing as how my brother was able to get numerous controllers when working at KB, there is no problem. I'll buy a BRAND new PS2, for only 40 dollars (splitting with my bro).

cool:

Good deal man - MAKE SURE YOU GET A VERSION 7!!!!! S-39000 and up series.
