We need a Flash master. Anything to get away from all the boring, cookie-cutter shit.

elstatec 07-06-2004 10:14 PM

I think it depends on how it is used. Sparingly, it can be the difference in your site standing out. But if you go overboard, it's just overwhelming.

hawks is ok but is very simular to the current design.

I like buckweed's second design - really stands out... but willl have to wait to see the finished design as its not complete.

EDIT: sorry double post

We've found a winner.

Short Hand 07-07-2004 06:45 AM

flash at times is like a plague to the internet. Good for one time hit sites, but when you keep on coming back and use the site on a daily basis it becomes a pain.

No, it wouldn't. Every scrap of usability research on this has proven that flash intros are seen as annoying and an obstacle to the user.

Trust me on this one.

Short Hand 07-07-2004 07:36 AM

flash intro's are only good for one hit sites that you visit maybe 2 times. gf1 is not going to be like that.

I was also thinking that maybe this new site could be a great place to support mods that are coming out, like a way of promoting mods and such and for mod ceators to come to for help in promotingm ods and such.

Ya, flash would be the wrong way to go.

The mod thing would be good because I have a mod of my own coming out.

Badscript, what are you going to do with aa.com? When groundforce1 is ready, start that and then advertise it here on aa.com.

aa.com will be integrated into gf1.com

Will probably put a note on aa.com front and not found page + 5 seconds delay + forward to gf1.com

I suppose you mean Total Conversion mods. For now I think TA mods will of course be featured on the news, and we will mirror the file to ease the load of the creator's if necessary, then maybe some interviews and such; and if it's good enuff we may feature the mod on one of our game servers.

But that's about it. If you have some other idea pls share.

I agree and disagree with Short Hand on this. gf1.com should not look like other sites out there, but the design you've done, SH, won't do either. It's a usability problem, not an aesthetic one.

Have to strike a balance between form and function.

Jotun 07-07-2004 12:35 PM

im really lost here...i was away for a whole week, what is groundforce1.com?

yea but then theres good and then theres bad, and thats just bad, sorry.

this is a fps site, not anything else.

wintersforge 07-07-2004 12:36 PM

i have to agree with the old man..but at the same token SH is on to something....

thats only the index the sub pages are completely diffrent and built for mass cataloging like gf1.com will need, if you wish for a sample of the sub pages i can whi p one up fast. it looks un sustainable, but i promise it can.

elstatec 07-07-2004 12:39 PM

another point is look at the design, show 1 relevance to the site being about fps games, excluding the 'groundforce name'

i hate flash, i know quite a bit, but the only good flash site is the 0.099% top of them and i doubt anyone here would make one within the top 50% let alone the 0.099%

Zoner 07-07-2004 12:40 PM

It's probably better to go right into the "subpage" look right off the bat, since users probably won't go back to the index if the subpages have those links duplicated on them.

Usability research has shown that users first look to the left and top of the screen for navigation. An unconventional navigation system decreases user satisfaction.

I'm all for artistic license, but when you're dealing with an information-driven site, you gotta put the user first.

why put pictures of games that will go out of date sooner or later ? new games will come out why not have them, its just a satisfaction to the changing times thats all. I figured a diffrent index page would seem great, but only time and decisions made by this community will tell.

There isn't enough links.

When they look for files, you would need to change the whole layout. And if you were trying to read something you would need to change it. Not such a good idea.

elstatec 07-07-2004 12:52 PM

different? its shit. your 'idea' is still a jpeg.

i mean fair enough for a flash site, but jesus thats one of the worst ideas ever.

Jotun 07-07-2004 12:53 PM

Short Hand's > all

but will someone please tell me what this site is? i was away for a whole week and im so lost.

Short Hand 07-07-2004 12:54 PM

1 you can fit as many links as strvs, as when you click one the pages goes to a another page with all the inner workings in it. with a more traditional page set up. it does have enough, the index page on stresses the main topics which all the sub topics fit under, + more main topics can fit if needed. i made sure it would work out. and it does.

only the index is wacky as you say, but the sub pages become traditional as soon as you get out of the index page, + no stolen copyrights with pics in the lgo's as of now. since it is from scratch.
