Depends what he wants it for, sli at the minute is prtty much for high res gaming with everything cranked up, if someone buys an sli setup to run at 1024x768 with standard settings they need a good slap. It has its good and bad points, ive seen enough benchmarks and on occasion the x850xt can outperform 2 sli'd 6800 ultras. Other times the 6800's lay a whoopin in doom 3 benchmarks at 1600x1200 with everything turned up, more or less any opengl game for that matter.

Doom 3 i run at 1280x1024 4xfsaa on the high settings (cause ultra settings = oOo: ). The built in time demo i score 55 or so fps. Thats not really saying much though. Some people look at timedemo scores and base what they buy off that.

Theres plenty of areas in doom 3 that drop my fps quite a lot. The reactor core level for example, i was using a plasma rifle in that area beside the reactor core with the flying heads everywhere and i was getting around 20fps. Theres one segment in the doom 3 expansion with zombies walking through an xray machine, where i dropped to around 20fps again, some weird glass distortion effect seemed to cause it.

Sli at the minute is definately usefull, expensive way to go but if you want max settings in games like doom 3 or chronicles of riddick its either get sli or wait for the next gen of cards.

At current, im waiting for the next gen cards. Oh man, my next PC is going to be such a proformance boost. CPU over 4 ghz, 2 gigs-o-ram, two 120 gig sata (gen 2) hd's. Then whatever high end vid card is leading the pack next go around.

4ghz is overrated, im at 4ghz now and don't see much differerence over 3.3. Whats your current cpu?

Miscguy 04-05-2005 11:02 AM

I have a good PC now, thats why im so content to wait.

i have a 3200+ 64 AMD, a gig of mushkin 222 special edition ram, and a 5950u 256. A 120 gig seagate on ata. I didnt see much point for going sata when i built it. Next build i will since by then the next gen should be out and isnt it supposed to be like 300?

I don't know why he wouldn't overclock. Change 2 things in BIOS and your done. Maybe he just wasn't up-to-date on current tech and wanted to know what the best was.

As for the video cards, you can substitute anything you want in there. I'd take dual 6800GTs over a X850XT anyday.

yeah I dont really plan on overclocking. But if its as easy as it sounds then ill do it. I am also deciding whether to just buy the pc premade or buy the part and have someone else build it. My luck with building pcs isnt really the best out there. I tried to add in a wireless card into my Gateway and accidentally dropped the screwdriver i had in my hand onto the CPU. waranty somehow covered it. But I am going to price out the system I want so I can look for a job that can get me the money quickely. Thanks for the help

Actually I just got a new monitor today. 20 inch LCD TV monitor. Very good quality picture and all for 100 bucks. Thats not the standard price I just got it cheap from a rental company very slightly used.

geRV 04-05-2005 08:17 PM

Buying a premade one usually ends up with you taking it up the ass for a high price on cheap components. Better making it yourself or like you said getting someone with a clue to build it for you.

Forte 04-05-2005 08:18 PM

yeah i was looking at falcon pc. I decided not to when their cheapest pc is 2,500. Im just going to buy the parts and get a friend to build it. Dont want to risk me fucking it up.
