Yes pyro rpg's own all, let me just adjust this straitjacket of yours so its a bit of a tighter fit.

If we're going by popularity all over thre world (like your arguement about thats why soccer is the best sport) than RPGs are the most popular and therefore the best games in the world.

"Sure they are"
Oblivion boasts a new artificial intelligence system, fully developed in house by Bethesda, codenamed 'Radiant AI'. It is a major source of excitement for many of the fans of the series as it aims to counter what was believed to be one of the major flaws of the previous installment (The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind): the lack of 'life' of the NPCs in the game. Radiant AI gives every NPC a set of 'needs' (such as hunger) that they will need to fulfill, thus creating a more lifelike world.

Radiant AI works by giving NPCs a list of goals. Nothing else is scripted. They must decide how to achieve these goals by themselves based on their individual statistics. A hungry NPC might compare his current gold against his moral values to decide whether he will walk to a store and purchase food, or just steal it; a skilled archer can choose to hunt his own deer.

This has required massive testing, but has even greater long-term flexibility for future NPC AI as well as testing with PAC AI for further developments.

The following are examples of unexpected behavior discovered during early testing:

1. One character was given a rake and the goal "rake leaves"; another was given a broom and the goal "sweep paths," and this worked smoothly. Then they swapped the items, so that the raker was given a broom and the sweeper was given the rake. In the end, one of them killed the other so he could get the proper item.
2. Another test had an on-duty NPC guard become hungry. The guard went into the forest to hunt for food. The other guards also left to arrest the truant guard, leaving the town unprotected. The villager NPCs then looted all of the shops, due to the lack of law enforcement.
3. In another test a minotaur was given a task of protecting a unicorn (there is only one unicorn in the game). However, the minotaur repeatedly tried to kill the unicorn because he was set to be an aggressive creature.
4. In one Dark Brotherhood quest, the player can meet up with a shady merchant who sells skooma, an in-game drug. During testing, the NPC would be dead when the player got to him. The reason was that NPCs from the local skooma den were trying to get their fix, didn't have any money, and so were killing the merchant to get it.
5. While testing to confirm that the physics models for a magical item known as the "Skull of Corruption," which creates an evil copy of the character/monster it is used on, were working properly, a tester dropped the item on the ground. An NPC immediately picked it up and used it on the player character, creating a copy of him that proceeded to kill every NPC in sight.

Bethesda has been hard at work to fix these issues, balancing an NPC's needs against his penchant for destruction so that the game world still functions in a usable fashion.

That should be pretty damn funny to watch, amazing stuff.
I've seen in one of the videos this woman getting annoyed with her dog that kept waking her up so she firstly froze it with a spell, it eventually woke up and so she hurled some kind of fireball at it hah.
This is just my kind of game, I love jus having open ended world where I can just do whatever I want. Mines pre-ordered, hope it runs alright on my 9800 pro 128mb, I realise it'll stutter sometimes but the rest of my setup is the recommended quote, heres hoping.

Indeed they are.

mr.miyagi 03-14-2006 12:43 PM

Had to drag this topic back again, muahahaa.

PC Gamer gave Oblivion 93%

small sample:

"Some people will say they don't have time for a game this huge and immersive, but Oblivion players will just laugh. You think we had time? Once you start, everything else just loses importance. Suddenly you've called in sick, your girl- or boyfriend has given up on you, and all you have is sweet, blissful Oblivion."

I have scans of the review, pm me if you want them.......jeez how sad did that just sound?

If ever there was a doubt that this game was going to be ridiculous fun - that pretty much blew it out the water.

SoLiDUS 03-21-2006 04:32 PM

Torrent download FTW...

I still have to finish CALL OF CTHULHU (great game, try it) and ANKH (if you like Lucasarts style games, try it), but I want to get into it as soon as possible.

dr nein 03-21-2006 04:43 PM

ja, once a decent torrent was released anyway. GG stupid people that don't test their releases.

/blesses GIGANEWS subscription. . .

ninty 03-21-2006 09:15 PM

I got the game. it's really good so far. even been through the gates to oblivion in kvatch. took me about an hour to create my character since there are so many bloody sliders to customize him.

SoLiDUS 03-21-2006 10:30 PM

LOL, really ? Wow. Character customizati0wn3d! biggrin:

beer:

You could, realistically, spend hours in the character creation section. Facially ( eek: ) - its deeper than other Create-A-Character games (SMACKDOWN! comes to mind). . .

Youll see words that you've never seen before (the fuck is a sellion) in the menu. Great overall system.

Oh - and the game fucking rocks. I played for 6 hours yesterday, and spent 4 of it in the Imperial City - so many houses. . .so much loot. Definitely a place for my negro blade wielding thief.

The only problem with the game is that if you dont have a SUPER HIGH system - default settings are going to look like shit and you will need to tweak them.

What system do you have? is 2gb of ram a pretty important upgrade or will my 1gb be enough....
rest of mine is: p4 3.0, 9800 pro 128mb, think i'll need a vid card upgrade?

TGB! 03-22-2006 04:51 PM

I'll try to post screens later if folks havent gotten the game.

Honestly the only real problem I have with the graphics is when youre outside looking into the distance. The textures on objects that arent in your "cell" (the area the game loads that you're running around in) - look like shit. Which isnt suprising isnce if they loaded everything, the game would run at 5FPS.

When youre in the city or in forests and not having to look at the shitty mountains in the distance - the game looks great.

I'm going to upgrade anyway, because its bullshit that you cant get the quality seen in the Coming Soon video's unless you have an XBOX360.

A german review dude ran the game with a 9800. . .it looked ok at 1024-760 (or whatever that resolution is). Thats what I run the game at and it looks great and runs better. Its not going to wow you with particle effects and shit - but it doesnt jerk you out of the experience.

I cant wait to get home and play some more (even though right now I'm tired as all hell).

I would say the main thing with this game is the video card - some cards listed on the retail box have been removed from the "supported card" FAQ on the official website - meaning some people are shit outta luck running series 5 nVidia FX cards. That and system memory. But the card overall. So I'll be inveesting in a 6800GT for upgrade. I'd get a 7600 if I felt I REALLY needed it.

Overall though - expect this game to get patches bleeding out the ass.

Still the game kicks ass. As for the looting - I havent actually DONE any looting, as most houses are shut tighter than mormon chicks legs, and there are fucking guards - EVERYWHERE. Right now Im thinking about just killing one of the shop propieters that has goods I want, and simply paying the fine - or going to jail, and then returning and looting her items (although I THINK the game is now setup to where after three days, items like that simply go poof. . .which would SUCK).

Nyck 03-22-2006 04:57 PM
Right now Im thinking about just killing one of the shop propieters that has goods I want, and simply paying the fine - or going to jail.[/quote:5c080]

Figures rolleyes: , way to become just another statisic annoy:

biggrin:

ninty 03-22-2006 08:43 PM

This is on my default settings that the game gave me. I don't know how many FPS i'm running so if anyone knows how to enable that I would appreciate it. I would then increase the level of detail cause as it is now it runs pretty smoothly. it's only 1024X768. My rig can handle a little more I think.
