I believe a lot of people are basically brainwashed into their religion, and that many people do believe they will go to heaven and all that. Their belief system is a way of life for them.

That being said I was raised catholic and went to a catholic school for 13 years and i basically call myself an atheist now.

Once again, though, they may be brainwashed and truely believe it but it just means a harsher realization when they're on their deathbed.

When people tell them the facts and everything, they reject it, but it's still there. It's a whole what-if thing that they'll have to deal with sooner or later... just sooner the better IMO.

Athiest? I never got that. That means you don't believe in a religion, you just think you die and go into the earth?

ninty 03-09-2007 11:59 AM

It means you don't believe in a deity, not that you can't believe in a religion or spirituality. Theism = belief in god. Atheism = disbelief in god.

But basically yeah. You're just a bunch of carbon compounds and when you die, that's it.

have you ever been to the south, prot?

down in virginia at school, we have people preach the bible on campus, screaming that people will burn in hell if they do not repent for such stupid things. this guy is fucking nuts, and he believes every word of the bible.

its not just that guy, i know plenty of people who believe every word. its really sickening that these people can be so brainwashed.

Please. Athiests, in the commonly accepted definition reject any organized belief system that is not based on emperical evidence - period. Any belief system based on moral codes and the like are hunky dory.

Maybe its based in faith because as human beings, we have no science or the needed tools to explain the things that religion represents. Is it so far fetched to believe that there are some things that OUR science cant explain? If I put a computer in front of Issac Newton - you think hed be able to explain how it worked? Of course not - he lacks the tools and the ability to suss that out - even though he was (and still is) one of the greatest thinkers of his time.

ninty 03-09-2007 12:38 PM

well, we're discussion atheism as it relates to religion and god.

And no, it's not far fetched for people to believe in things that our science can't explain. I didn't say that it was.

Even still, I think my point is being missed. I'm saying at some point in time, they will most likely question their beliefs.

My comment was based on this comment here - you say "Facts" as a means to counter their belief in faith based matters. . .and I countered - your "science" may be like stick and rocks compared to the science that "God" exists in.
