I came up with this equation a few months ago, and I have been playing around with it ever since. I've never really showed it to any other people, and I thought this would be a good way to evaluate it. This invlovles finding a an unknown square of a known number using two other variables. I came up with this for the purpose of finding a numbers square (x*x) without the use of a calculator. However, it has proven to be not all that useful. It still involves multiplying large numbers. The method used ends up being an identity (x^2=x^2), broken down into addition and multiplication. It shows a very interesting relationship between the root and square of two different numbers. Its very basic algebra, but I don't think I've seen anything like it before. If you have and I'm just an idiot, let me know! OK, the theory goes... Given any number in {R} X, the square can be calculated as the sum of y^2 + xz + yz, where Y is any number in {R} and Z is the difference of X and Y.

Can anyone disprove it? If so, let me know. The Domain and Range may not be {R,R}, I'm not sure. Find any problems with it ? Like I said, I've never done much with it other than think about it and play around with it. Its not very practical or useful, but it is fairly interesting. Gimme some feedback!

It only works because the right-hand side creates an equality (thanks, capt.
Obvious!) provided one inputs the proper numbers, Z having a special trait.
What got me interested in your trick was the square root idea: I've always
wondered whether calculators used a special equation for solving the above
mentioned or used a brute force method...

I've checked a couple of sites and one method, the CORDIC Algorithm, can
solve the square root problem with a special equation. Check it out of you

This equation is basic algebra bud. Its not complicated and it is pretty much unusable. However, like I said... the relationship of root and square is interesting. Why did I come up with this? I was sitting in calc physics class and we had to do some lame problem involving a decimal number squared. I didn't have my calculator :(. I thought to myself. Holy shit, what would I do if I got stuck on a desert island with no calculator? So, instead of listening to some crap about Newton’s Third law, I started playing around with common squared numbers and noticed the link. It took me a while to put it into equation form. At that time I didn't realize how arbitrary it was. Then I started applying it and realized that it was just a number trick. But an interesting and fun number trick nonetheless.

PS - Sloi, I'm sure many cheap calculators use BRUTE FORCE rather than algorithms
