Confederate flag banned at one southern school

I saw a news story about a school which has banned the wearing or displaying of the Confederate flag at all hake: , the reason being that it is "racist, and intimidating" hake: yet people can wear a Malcom X t-shirt and call it ethinic pride oOo: this is just another case of political correctness going to far.

I'm not sure on this Green. What does the confederate flag represent, and what does Malcom X reperesent.

Pfc.Green 10-10-2002 09:25 AM

Well if they use the 'racist and intimidating' arguement then thats what Malcom X was racist and intimidating. Why dont the ban white shirts, cause hey the KKK wore the color white right? why dont they ban the displaying of the British flag, cause hey they intimidated us?

I have to go to work now, but I strongly suggest reading up on Malcom X. I think you might be suprised.

Pfc.Green 10-10-2002 10:14 AM

The point is that, why should people, wearing t-shirts of Malcom X, or other parts of there heritage be allowed to do so when people wearing shirts or displaying the confedrate flag not be allowed to do so? I am in no way a supporter of what the south was fighting for, hell all my anscestors fought against it, but I just dont think its anyones right to say "you cant wear that, cause i'm gonna say it itimidates me", I bet if a kid came to a school wearing a shirt with the intimidating and not very peaceful Black panthers on it nothing would happen.

Korvac 10-10-2002 11:01 AM

You rednecks love that confederate flag, don't you.

pest 10-10-2002 11:08 AM

I tend to agree with pfc green here. If someone can say that the confederate flag intimadates them, then who is to say that a Malcolm X shirt doesnt intimidate someone else. Who gets to decide? What are the criteia? Are they written and published, or is it one persons interpetation? Are they applied equally and fairly? Where will it end?

That sucks, so if one of the students managed to afford to buy The General Lee, he wouldnt be allowed to take it to school to show it to his mates.

10-10-2002 12:36 PM

Take a look at what the CONFEDERATE FLAG embodies. Would you have ANY problem BARRING a german immigrant family from being told to take down their NAZI flag, even IF it is a part of their history they refuse to give up.

The CONFEDERATE flag belongs in the past, with alot of the mistakes of this country, and is one of the greater symbols of its greed and narrow mindedness. I cant think of ONE reason why anyone would even bother to wave that flag other than because it's been beaten into their heads that its a part of the "Souths" proud history.

As far as Malcolm X is concerned - look at who the man BECAME, not who he was. Then you might understand Low Sparks objections to using him as a point of reference.

I say this to everyone but PFC GREEN. It should be obvious by now that hes got a death grip on his NRA card, and has a permanent blush on his neck.

WHITE POWER!

pest 10-10-2002 12:47 PM

Are you talking about the man Malcolm became right before he was killed by the black panthers for becoming that man?

That isnt the man the X shirts and hats are celebrating.

Free speech, whether it is spouting offensive (intimidating) drivel on the internet or displaying the battle flag, needs to be administered evenly and fairly. Thats all I ask. Affirmative action has become a crutch and an enabler. It needs to be abolished, in all its forms.

Pfc.Green 10-10-2002 01:02 PM

I am so fucking sick of you Ed, I am no racist, I am just against this pc shit that says you cant wear a Confederate flag if you want to. I did not come up with the malcome X point, that was on the news, although it is a good one. And Ed this fucked up arguement about me being a redneck is laughable, I dont own a gun, I'm not part of the NRA, I live in Seattle, and the farthest south i have ever been is Maryland. Most people who display the Confedrate flag, arent doing so because they support the idea of racism or slavery (some do I admit) most do it because its in there familys personal history and there heritage. No a family may display a Nazi flag, I may not like it, but hey its free speech right? What makes it right for someone to say you cant display your southern heritage, but we can display our black heritage.

Low spark 10-10-2002 01:22 PM

Slow down.. relax. I don't know why they banned the confederate flag, for sure. But I can imagine some dumb redneck kid wearing it and preaching his little white superirority ruining it for anyone who might were becuase they think it's cool. And by the way Green, I have met very few people that display the Confederate because it's part of their heritage.(But I have met a few).. I have met a lot of wanna be rednecks that display it because they think it makes them better then someone...

Thats a mighty hateful, prejudiced thing to say. (See how easily this stuff can be flipped?)

There is no such thing as FREE SPEECH at a school. It is a government building. SO - if they say a Confederate Flag promotes racism, and is a sad reminder of times past - they can take it down 100%. If you want to be an ass and display one on your lawn - go right ahead.

Green. You'd make Joe McCarthy blush.

Heres the difference between Black Heritage and "so-called" white heritage - blacks dont go around espousing the teachings of Farakhan and "pre-saved" Malcolm X. They wear African clothing and celebrate the history of their people. The CONFEDERATE flag has ZERO positive connotation to it. ZERO. It belongs to a devisive and terrible time in American history. Asking for someone at a public facility to be comfortable with that, is like asking a Jew if hes alright with having a Swastika hung over a schools name, simply because the school is in a predominantly German area. Its ludicrous. You arent celebrating ANY kind of history that DESERVES to be celebrated.

I mean if ANYONE can give me ONE thing that that flag represents, one thing that casts that history in a positive light - then I'll say fine. Go wave it. That's something to be proud of.

True that my label of these people. The type people I'm talking about are people I've met throughout my life. Most of them were just like me a 2nd or 3rd gerneration American, who ancestors had nothing to do with the Civil War, but they thought displaying the confederate flag as act hate against other races. I can't help but be prejudiced, everyone is to some degree.

I don't know if you think this as positive or not. But I think of the Confederate Flag as a reminder of the fact the US is not perfect, that we make mistakes, and that we should learn form those mistakes so that we can make it a better country now, and in the future.

The confereate flag was not always a symbol of hate and to many, it still isnt. It is a symbol of regional pride. The liberal pc crowd deemed it a hate symbol and now the rest of the country is supposed to just lay down like sheep?

Ed - your entire arguement is one emotional generalization and prejudice after another. You seem to be more hate filled than the people you are flaming. Set your emotions aside for a second and look at the facts and bias of what you are saying.

I love a vague post more than anything. Facts? What facts? Someone said Blacks carry their history around so why cant the South. I pointed out that you wont find too many blacks running around with "Honky-Killer" shirts on, and so on and so forth. Fact of the matter is this, blacks in America have no real history that is exploitive and whos celebration comes at the expense of others.

THATS what the Confederate Flag does. It celebrates a Regions decision to split from the United States of States rights, which included slave owning and trading. This is NOT something to be glorified and raised in celebration. I'm sorry but it's not. Forgotten and erased? No. It's history, American history. But the folks who ARE flying the flag are not doing so just to make sure we dont forget Americas sad history - they are doing so out of some silly ass rememberance of the past. Germans have Nazi history, yet how many do you REALLY think fly the Nazi flag so they dont "forget" what has come before.

SO! - Please to be not so vague next time, and point out my "Emotional Generalizations" so I can correct them or explain them.

Are you kidding me? The LIBERAL PC crowd deemed it a hate speech? Fighting for the right to enslave one race put the label of "hate" and "ignorance" on this group.

Colonel 10-10-2002 02:46 PM

Where's Von when you need him? Come on Von bring out your old sig again!

BTW - here's a quote from Malcolm X:
"There is nothing in our book, the Koran, that teaches us to suffer peacefully. Our religion teaches us to be intelligent. Be peaceful, be courteous, obey the law, respect everyone; but if someone puts his hand on you, send him to the cemetery. That’s a good religion."
"Message to the Grass Roots," speech, Nov. 1963, Detroit (published in Malcolm X Speaks, ch. 1, 1965).

So much for turning the other cheek.

10-10-2002 02:59 PM

Colonel -

You must have missed the part where he took a trip to MECCA, to the TRUE birthplace of his religion, and completely altered his perspective and view.

Your quote is from 1963. He left in 1964.

Low spark 10-10-2002 03:00 PM

Man what an uppity black boy he was. Imagine him saying something like that in 1963. The white's were using blacks for chew toys for their police dogs. Blowing up churches with children inside. How dare he, tell people to stand up against such treatment.

10-10-2002 03:03 PM

By ANY means neccesary.

I'm sorry, but blacks backs where against the wall. You could turn the other cheek, but theres a good chance that one has already been bloodied by the corrupt cop or redneck's buddy.

There are times when pure, unadulterated physicality is the ONLY language understood.

Revolution.

pest 10-10-2002 03:08 PM

Ed - You keep telling me how I think, how I view different symbols and how blacks think. I'm not going to even get into the reasons for the civil war. I wasnt there, you werent there and the history books are different now than they were when I was in school. Mainly because of the liberal educational system that preaches "white man bad, all others good" (obviously just my opinion.)

I never once said slavery was a good thing. You said I said that, or at least implied that I think that. Also, if blacks never went around exspousing farakan or malcolm X, then why are they so well known? Not for their message of love.

What I am saying about the facts is this - nothing you stated is fact. It is all your beliefs, that you apparently feel strongly about. The flip side is that someone else can feel just as strongly for the other side without being hate filled. You refuse to even acknowledge that possibility. Who is the narrow minded one then? When it comes down to it, you were the one that called names and applied your perception of traits to entire races and regions. Oh yeah - no one ever stated that it would be a good idea to hang the confederate flag over the schools name. That was you making wild accusations and leaps of logic. Personally, I dont display the battle flag because of the negative image it has, but I 100% support the right of others to be able to fly/wear/display it. We dont need any more of big brother in our lives than we already have.

Bottom line - if it offends you, then by all means be offended, but dont tell me what I should and shouldnt be offended by. And if a picture of a flag intimidates you, then you have no business being in public school, you need to ride the short bus to school.

10-10-2002 03:37 PM

Ahhh - if im offended by the flag I MUST be a retard.

Are you contending that the goals of the Confederacy werent detrimental to not ONLY a race of people, but to the stability of the nation itself?

Are you actually saying there is a legitimate need for the Confederate flag to be shown for anything OTHER than historical reference?

Show me where I say all whites are evil. Show me where I say all blacks reject the teachings of Farakhan, and an ignoranct Malcolm X. There aren't generalizations, but a specific criticism of a group of people who are a little TOO narrowminded themselves to feel that there may be some people who dont want to have a "dance of joy around the flag", because maybe - JUST MAYBE the connotations (rightfully) associated with it just dont sit will with others.

A school has ZERO right to hang anything that the government doesn't want hung. Bottom line. If you want to hang that out on your line and salute it every day, that is your right as an American Citizen. Again, not ONCE did I contend that.

However, when you try to tell me that the social climate associated with that flag was anything but narrow-minded and bigoted, I then ask you to go read a non-biased book that isn't chruned through an educational system.

You've already attempted to paint Malcolm X that man as a wholly white devil hating monster, so your assertions regarding The Confederacies dont hold much weight for me. There are no grey areas here.

Black is black. White is white.

You sheep need to get a fucking dictionary because you obviously have no clue what a liberal is. How the hell can a liberal be politically correct?! This cosmic occurance only happens in the U.S. appearently. Liberals believe in doing what you please, and they do not care about someone's lame ass flags. If someone would not let you hang a flag of your choosing, then that person is probably NOT a liberal; he is more of a conservative or a fascist.:P

I have no problem with the Confederate flag, it is a part of history and we can't just pretend that the Civil War never happened.

I do have a problem with many of teh people who wear a Confederate flag T-shirt, mainly because these are your typical white power, racist dumbshits.
