MY JOB SUCKS...
Rules are rules but...
About an hour ago, I was at the counter of our information window. A young lady had filed for unemployment and for whatever reason she hasnt been paid for 3 weeks. She's currently on the streets, or homeless (she came in with someone with a beatup truck, who didn't seem overly concerned, but whatever hes getting sex so what does he care right), and is more than likely a runaway at 19. Anywho, she didnt have a claim form to resubmit for monies, and was wondering why she wasn't getting her check. You could tell she did drugs but she was lucid despite being shaky (maybe from malnutrition). She was getting frustrated because (not suprisingly) she wasn't getting the information she wanted from a rep who more than likely just gave her some generic information. I spoke with her, and get a rep to actually sit down with her and talk to her. This didn't go well either, and the girl started to break down and cry. She then told the rep who was helping her... "You could have saved my life...remember my face, you're going to see it every night in your nightmares after I hurt myself". Then left in horrid tears. They stayed in the beatup truck in the parking lot for about 30 minutes, and I had out security watch them both. Anyway, yea I hate my job sometimes. |
Thats kinda sad.
What city is this in? |
CALIFORNIA.
|
The City of California. Sounds beautiful.
|
What is your job exactally? Sounds like it blows.
|
what's your job?
|
Tell her to spend her drug money on food instead!! I have no sympathy for people like that. She should rob a bank, that way, if she gets away with it, she can eat.....and if she gets caught, she'll have a roof over her head with 3 meals a day!! Fucking losers!!
|
Yeah, what kind of job do u have Mr. Special Ed? it seems like ur... flamethrower:

It's a shame how reality can be sometimes.. or, however you choose to define it.
I hope you don't encounter any more things in the work place that disappoint or put you in a somber mood, Ed. |

"You could have saved my life...remember my face, you're going to see it every night in your nightmares after I hurt myself".[/quote:c3a8a] ha that sounded like one of the things that eminem said in his song. |
I work in an unemployment office...which sucks because people dont ACTUALLY get checks from us. We just assist people with the "job search" portion requirement of receiving unemployment. Which means, as soon as she said word one about her check, I knew she was gonna go away without shit.
As far as ARKAN is concerned, I only SAID she looked like she was coming down. She was lucid. Those shakes can EASILY come from malnutrition and the like. SOrry to say, but in this day and age a will and a desire and an ability to work do NOT garuantee employment. Every day I see a Bachelored fellow come through my office, and there isn't shit he's doing wrong, these are just the breaks. I am not for enabling a nation to sit on its ass, I am however a little upset that this girl will probably go back on the street and do what she HAS to do to survive. All because we have to follow rules. Ahhhh - a lil clarification. The reason she cant get money is because presently her case is being investigated (which can take DAYS and weeks) and until then she has shit to do but wait. Oh, well back track her pay, but by then - Well who knows. All I can say is for those who think things are really THAT black and white, pray you never EVER find yourself in that position. |
Yeah, I hate the state our laws and such are in, soooo much red tape. Same thing goes up here you want something from the gov't it's a long wait. Same in hospitals you have to wait so long to get treated they don't care if your bowels are hanging out..... take a number and sit down. Like this guy got wrongfully accused of killing a 11 year old girl, he got 40 years in prison, they then proved that he didn't do it and they just let him out on his 34th year with NO compensation whatsoever, just a big SORRY! I FUCKED UP! from the gov't and off he goes, a 70 year old man, with basically nothing. It's not like the gov't doesn't have any money, it's just all the red tape can be misleading, and some dirty fucking politician may "accidentally" transfer money into this bank account in the cayman islands.

I've been in the "unemployment line" more times than I like to count. It's hard and really destroys those last threads of confidence you have in yourself. Depression comes pretty easy when your in that situation..I know, I lived it for about 2 years, and it seems she is neck deep in it.
Thankfully, I have fantastic parents who really helped me through it, and friends who know how to "turn that frown upside down". I've been lucky to have been blessed with the recent luck I have had. Great job, great boss, and great workmates who make going to work not a chore but a blessing. It's so good I even give up an hour at the end of my shift to give the other guys a hand getting stock out and marking off incoming merchandise. I'm completely commited and dedicated ( probably a workaholic too wink: ), and I wish more people out there could find that same sort of luck I've had. Dont take what she said to heart Ed, coming from personal experience (not mine, but people I once considered friends), those kind of people play on you like fucking vultures and use the money they get for alcohol or drugs. Maybe her situation is dire. maybe she is in real trouble, but if you have rules to follow there's nothing more you can do. It's not worth getting turned inside out by it. Leave you're work at work, dont take it home with you. |

Some people just dont have anyone to turn to. Its kinda of sad. For all we know her parents died and since she's over 18 shes old enough to care for herself, or so says the government. But anyway I dont know what I would do.
|
Ahem.
I completely believe in the process we have instituted here in the United States of America. I believe the "red tape" as it were, keeps the system from getting clogged with crap. I can only imagine how many cranks we would get if the checks, balances, and rechecks we have in place at our office werent there. This girls case is tragic. I was gonna slip her a 50, but if it came back in anyway I'd lose my job. People who are trying to work the system do not sit in cars for 45 minutes after being told they have no option left. However, people who have nowhere to go and no options do. I know exactly what kind of mindset she is in, and her mind is rightfully telling itself shes better off dead. There wasn't one person in that office who felt this was someone pulling a fast one, since if you HAVE filed for California Unemployment then you already know from the get go that pulling a fast one is nearly impossible. If you EVER get called into our office, you know you have had to fuck up bad and chances are you arent getting anymore checks. Sucks because my brother has been collecting for about 4 months now, not looking for work, etc. etc. And this girl was at the end of her rope. There is no two ways about it. It sucked cause her "companion" I know couldn't care less. This chick was desperate. I apologize for the drug comment - although I'm sure she wasnt drug free I wont say she was a junkie - and thinking back she was pale. But these are the casualties of a system that refuses to be abused more than it is. It's willing to piss on the needy if it ensures the abusers are kept at a minimum. |

Believe me easier said than done, when one is addicted to a drug they will do ANYTHING for their next hit, i just hope she can get the treatment she needs and live a normal life after or else she will end up as another jane doe in the coroner's office. Up here i see this shit all the time, i volunteer at a community outreach program, and sometimes all these people need is somewhere they can call home. Here in my town the group homes, woman shelters, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, rehab programs, adult education programs, and the income assistance programs are all chalk full, it's a shame when the government would rather waste billions of dollars to go to war rather than improve the things that really matter.
|
Most red tape is there because it was needed to fix loop holes that were abused in the past.
The drug thing is tough. On one hand I have no sympathy for someone that wont help themselves, but on the other hand, they have a chemical dependency that controls their thinking and impulses that many times cant be corrected without help. The real question is, who should be the one to help? |
Jesus. lol!

I don't like being an ass but this is all I can think of when reading that "remember my face" line:
"I'm a goddamn fuck-up for many reasons; many of which I am responsible for personally, meaning *I* got myself in this shit. I am in trouble partly or mainly because of the stupid choices I've taken in my life but I am going to make you feel like shit anyway, being conscious that you cannot help..." Sorry. My friend had it fucking rough too; still has A SHITLOAD of problems but he knows he got himself in trouble by not staying home or getting a job even though he's got more qualifications than most people in this forum... so I don't want to hear about *her* issues. I know the exceptions exists but most of the time these people get themselves in trouble so I won't be teary tonight. |

As none of us, except you, were there, all we can do is speculate on what is happening with this girls life. Her misfortunes could have been self inflicted, or could be a long line of bad luck which has unfortunately befallen her. Either way, to be 19 and in such dire circumstances...something terribly aweful must have happened to her, and she underestimated to difficulty that life can always be. |
Its like, for 1 in 3 people, life is great...for the other 2, life is shit.
I hate what's out there. It's frightening. I'm glad I have a Shitload of mates, and family that'd always be there for me if I tripped up. I have a great relationship with my parents too, I'd never do anyuthing to screw that up....Yet I'm not really takinmg advantage of the great position I'm in...i.e, not being as good to my parents as I possibly could be....Hearing stories like Eds, is like a cold slap in the face, I am taking advantage of life, and taking for granted the great situation I'm in, while people are shat on through, sometimes, pure bad luck. Fuck this world. hake: |

you gotta understand drugs are escapism.
i knew a kid a long time ago. got the shit belted out of him for about a decade. bad and regular. grew up under a parent thought it was normal to drag a scrawny little epileptic boy outta his bed half asleep and beat him unconscious a few times a week for something he has said or done weeks earlier. he was scared so shitless he wouldnt talk to anyone about it... told everyone from counsellors to cops lies or just to fuck off. so it just went on until he copped a beating with an axe handle. left half dead on the floor of his garage at 16.... rib through his lung and blood wall to wall. apparently his unlicenced brother found him and he ended up driving him to hospital. friend of his copping pretty much the same ended up putting a .22 in his mouth a few months later. not a very powerful gun the .22 and took him all night to die. i knew this kid and it was a lot less painfull than hanging about i can assure you. so yeah theres kids who just use drugs for fun and recreation and take it too far and probably do bring it on themselves. theres others that get taught real early how little value their life has. whatever scale thats on... from experiencing real hate to people not caring if you are without clothes or shelter. you spend an entire winter sleeping on concrete you might understand actually where that rates. if that gets put in ya head for too long theres not much concern for anything more than removing as much pain as you can or putting something in your head other than nightmares. and we are the only species that displays this evil. remember that. and sleep tight. |
[quote:fc1a8]and sleep tight.[/quote:fc1a8]
I will. oOo: [/quote] |
I think that all of us have to put up with sh!t times at our work. I am a supervisor at a silcon wafer plant, when I started over two years ago, I had 36 employees....today I have 13.
I have had to let go of 23 people. Some where chosen for me and I was just the messenger, but most were chosen by me. These were people with families that depended on them, single mother, single fathers, etc. I knew that some of the olders ones, were going to have a helluva time finding jobs that were going to pay them near what we did. The problem is, I have gotten a rep around work at being pretty good at this task. In the last lay off we had, not only did I have to inform mine, but sit in with another supervisor and watch four more get the hammer drop on them. One of which was a full grown man, who cried the entire time as I watched him empty his locker. What do you say to them? I have found that I can actually turn my feelings off, and it scares me. There is no doubt in my mind that I have grown more callous because of this. My friends see it, my family sees it. I have effectively distanced myself from everyone at work, and have done it somewhat with people outside of work. I remember when I started this job how excited I was, and how great the money seemed, but now I know it's not even worth it. |
