WTC steel to be used in new U.S. warship.

NEW YORK, Dec 28 (Reuters) - Recycled steel from the World Trade Center will be used to build part of a new U.S. warship, according to defense contractor Northrop Grumman.

The ship is to be named the New York, in honor of the almost 2,800 people who died in the attacks of Sept. 11 2001, Dan Knecht, said a spokesman for the firm.

Steel is set to be shipped to Northrop's shipyard in Pascagoula, Mississippi, for construction to begin in the middle of next year. The 684-foot ship should be ready for service in 2007.

The recycled steel from the Twin Towers, if it meets quality standards, will be used to form the ship's "stem bar", Knecht told Reuters. That is part of the ship's bow, where the vessel cuts the water.

New York authorities face problems disposing of the 1.62 million tonnes of rubble that went to the nearby a landfill from the World Trade Center site.

Some memorial sculptures made from recycled steel have been commissioned by the city, and earlier this year nearly 20,000 tonnes of Trade Center scrap was shipped to India for use in construction projects.

A fitting tribute I think.

This 9/11 stuff is going a bit on the crazy side. I think it is a dumb idea. It's still gonna cost alot to build it. Just make a new one from new materials. It's to much of a problem to get the metal out of the crap pulled from the site. They should just let it go. It happened and it was sad, but god, move on. I think this will just make the families suffer more, but thats just my opinion.

ninty 12-29-2002 12:02 AM

I head this on the radio. I think its pretty neat. What better way to use the stuff.

Milla 12-29-2002 12:04 AM

Awesome stuff

Pfc.Green 12-29-2002 12:04 AM

Its not like they are building the whole ship out of wtc steel, just a piece of the bow....the ship was going to be built anyway. I think the families would support this very much. Ships are often named for events/people.

Airborne Butters 12-29-2002 12:17 AM

They should make some bombs outta WTC scrap...if they can do that.

mikecs18 12-29-2002 12:19 AM
They should make some bombs outta WTC scrap...if they can do that.[/quote:09fce]

mikecs18 12-29-2002 12:23 AM
How so?[/quote:1313f]

bombs... u drob them and they go boom... no more metal. oOo:

if u use the metal for a building a part in a ship... thats something that can go on killing and killing and killing. make sence now?

Pfc.Green 12-29-2002 12:24 AM
How so?[/quote:84c29]

They would be dropped thus they would be gone, if you use the steel in something like a warship...then its a lasting tribute for people to see for years to come.

Airborne Butters 12-29-2002 12:24 AM

very...

Still, it's the vengance idea, but I suppose the longer lasting is better.

mikecs18 12-29-2002 12:25 AM

did I mention it would be a comemmorative part of history. 60 yrs from now we'll point to that ship in a history book with our grandkids in our lap and tell them how the trade centers were destroyed and the scrap was used to make a ship.

Recycled Spooge 12-29-2002 12:37 AM

I hope that the victims are very proud that the pieces of their grave site are being used to create a machine that is created for killing ten times over 2,800. Hurray indeed!

vVolf 12-29-2002 01:04 AM

So, so lame. lol

Yeah, its a good idea with the ship. But they could put pieces of metal the don’t need in Fragmentary grenades/bombs! LOL.

So their just going to take the steel and stick it on the boat?

To make the hull, they will melt the steel and reform it. Duh.

In 60 years time it will probably politically incorrect and illegal to allow grandkids to sit on their grandads lap...

Arkan 12-29-2002 09:53 PM

Well, i don't give a rats ass what everyone here thinks!! If i died in the attacks, i'd like someone to avenge my death !!
Actually, i lost a friend in the attacks and i think it's an honor that they're using the metal to build something that will wreak havoc on assholes who fuck with us. God bless the victims and this great country !!

Milla 12-29-2002 10:00 PM

dude no plane can get near our warships without being trashed

JowShmoe 12-29-2002 10:17 PM

my question is this...

its a 654 ft long or something, warship, named New York.

an aircraft carrier is 1,040 feet long, so its not an aircraft carrier. and aircraft carriers are named after people.

and our biggest cruisers are 532 feet, which are named after battles.

and its not a destroyer as they come in 465ft and 528 ft flavors, named after people.

so what kind of warship is this?

the last type of surface warship to be named after a state was a battleship, which arn't built anymore.

and some submarines, which max out at oh my, this book does not include ohio class, oh well, around 400 ft

can anyone shed light on the subject?

Pfc.Green 12-29-2002 10:26 PM

It will be the fifth of 12 amphibious assault ships, with a crew of 402 Navy personell and 800 Marines.

JowShmoe 12-29-2002 10:31 PM

sweet... but shit, when do we ever do amphibious assaults. we should do a practice raid on mexico or something.

Milla 12-29-2002 11:05 PM

I hope i get stationed on that ship biggrin:

Pfc.Green 12-29-2002 11:09 PM

Yeah, I would'nt mind getting stationed on her either.

Bazooka_Joe 12-30-2002 08:09 AM

I think they should use the steel for bombs, bullets, and artillery shells to use on Iraq and Afghanistan.

12-30-2002 08:14 AM

lol its great seeing everyone talk about iraq when N.Korea is ready to fuck america and the rest of the world RIGHT UP THE ASS yet bush doesnt even seem to notice cause he is too busy with iraq.

Bazooka_Joe 12-30-2002 08:51 AM

North Korea is the little country that could. They're the nerd at school that gets fed up with the bully, and unleashes a feirce attack of punches at the bullys gut, only to find out it dosen't faze him, and he wins up getting his face wiped on the wall.

vVolf 12-30-2002 08:53 AM

... And blood splats eveywhere, and people laugh at him/her, and (s)he has all her bones broken, and (s)he is about to die, and (s)he um... dies. laff.

12-30-2002 08:53 AM

i see differently.. fact is they got the power to do good amounts of damage via nuclear weapons.. and since bush is dealing with Iraq that leaves China and Russia to talk N.Korea out of making nukes.. (meh the commies should all just join together)

Bazooka_Joe 12-30-2002 08:59 AM

I do agree with you, it's just that I don't think they want to really attack us. I think the reason they are withholding their nukes is for self-defence, and in case they start crap with S. Korea again, not to attack us.
