Upgrade or Not to Upgrade - Athlon 800 to 1ghz.

Is it worth it? I mean, I want a cheap way to give me a little more uhm, but don't feel like upgrading to a new board and chipset.

If I go to Athlon TB 1ghz, I max out my board's specs for $65, but is there a noticable difference between 800 and 1ghz? Would it matter?

Or do I just upgrade my ATI 7500 to a 9700 for better FPS?

I'd put that $65 towards a new mobo and do it that way. No sense in upgrading 200 mhz.

i just went from AMD 900 to AMD 2200+, had to get a new mobo and DDr ram but i tell ya its worth it

No point upgrading 200mhz faster, you would barely notice any difference.

Yep.

Sergeant_Scrotum 12-30-2002 02:51 PM

if you do il take the old one, it sure would be one hell of an upgrade from my PII 355

Captain Canuck 12-30-2002 03:49 PM

Maybe I'll do that then. Just hate blowing the green if it's obsolete in 6 months.

Thanks..

Captain Canuck.

hey buy ram i got 600 some ram i had 128 and i noticed a big diffrentce not really fps but loading thing then i got a geforce 4 and i get lots of fps dont geta a radeon get geforce much better

Captain Canuck 12-30-2002 07:42 PM

This is my system

AMD Athlon Thunderbird 800Mhz (807 if you believe XP)
ASUS AV7 KT133
640Mgs RAM
ATI Radeon 7500 64Mgs
Soundblaster Gamer 5.1

So, if I go with a bigger and better mobo, say a ASUS AV7333 with an AMD XP2200. Will I notice a difference in game play? Or is it a combo of video card and mobo?

That is the question

Bleh, Athlon.

Athlon is about to fall entirely behind in the chip speed race.

While Athlon has their fastest chip on the market, Intel still hasn't released their fastest chip to the public, which nears 4ghz.

Not to mention Intel has their 3ghz out, and Athlon's fastest couldn't even keep up with their 2.53ghz.

Arkan 12-30-2002 09:21 PM

Well, if i were you, i'd stick to Athlon. Yeah, Intel may be faster but the price is off the hook !! Screw Intel, i'm sticking with AMD and the cheap price....it's way fast for gaming !!

Drew 12-31-2002 12:40 AM

I would say something in response, Arkan, but I shall grant you pardon for your kickass sig.

Captain Canuck 12-31-2002 07:34 AM

Dem some large sacs for a squirrel man. He have surgery or something?

Anyway. AMD is good for me, as Arkan has said, they're cheat. Also, AMD has always been right behind or just in front of Intel for most of the 90s. So what if they don't hit the 3Ghz mark before Intel, they will reach it and it will be far cheaper in price.

Really, we don't need 3Ghz of raw power when most games don't even utilize 1Ghz. Intel is pushing the envelope, great, that's good for us cheap asses because we can get last weeks tech this week for low cost. freak:

Save your money for a mobo, processor, and RAM.

rudedog 12-31-2002 09:58 AM

I don't think a 9700 pro or even a Ti 4600 is going to give you much of a improvement. Your CPU will still be the bottle neck and will hinder your video card.

Like Joe said, MB CPU RAM.

Good luck and let us know what you went with.
