Did you not upgrade your video card??[/quote:3674c]

Hell naw. That card is less than like 9 months old, Ill wait about another 6 - 9 months.

PS: Ill take screenies as the parts file in from UPS & FedEx heh. That way, if anyone has questions, I can show them how to do some stuff, too.

good system

Zap. USMC 03-26-2003 05:49 PM

Jesus, that's allot of money on a computer ed:

When I build my new system this summer, I only plan on getting a 2.0 ghz... there aren't any games out that will ever use a 2.0 for a couple years.

Zap. USMC 03-26-2003 06:01 PM

Oh yeah,

who manufactured the RAM you bought?

Nitesnipe,

You could of built your own computer, and got the same case and same hardware/software without the Alienware name on it for like two grand less...

Unless you got money, more power to ya, let them do the work! evil:

I think it would be more profitable to buy new stuff every year, you'd have better stuff, without wasting more money. I won't be getting anything new for a long time. And you are one lucky bastard.

I used to think my TNT2 was the bomb because it could run Half-Life. I was shunned when I had to run MoH in ultimate low settings. Although, I did have 80 FPS..

Bazooka_Joe 03-26-2003 11:13 PM

Well thank you all for the good comments, and the jealous ones. biggrin: I'm sure it will be a worthy investment, as I needed a high-end PC to play my Star Wars: Galaxies on! hehe

As for some questions, the RAM is Samsung. No, I'm sticking with the GF4 Ti, the cards like 9 months old, so no reason to get rid of it just yet. Nite, I made the PC. Ordered the parts, and putting it together myself.
=================================================
Ok, now for a generous update! happy: Today I got:

5 cans of canned air - no joke, these are the MOST powerful cans of air I've used EVER. Better than Quill, or any brand in CompUSA. They're called Blow-Off Duster, 9oz cans, and 5 were 10 bucks.

8 RAMsinks - little bastards were heavier than I thought!

Artic Silver - I never realized in came in Tube A and Tube B, heh

4 3-to-4 wire fan adapters, with green sheaths and black heat shrinkwraps
=================================================
OK, now for anyone intrested in using RAMsinks for their mobo, I took pics on how I did it.

1) Here's what you'll need:

Artic Silver, the RAMsinks (these are TweakMonster brand), and some sort of device to spread the epoxy, like a flat card, or the stick seen here that comes with the Artic Silver Kit.

2) Locate on your video cards the RAM chips. On my card (and most of todays' video cards) there are 2 above and 2 to the right of the heatsink/fan, as seen here.

3) Typically, the layout is much like this:

The RAMsink "fanlines" should be running the same way the writing on the chips is. So on mine, the top ones have the lines vertical, and the right-side ones are horizontal.

4) QUICK NOTE: If you feel up for it, you can use sandpaper and VERY GENTLY sand off the tops of the RAM. This way, heat transfer is better between the chips. JUST DON'T SAND TOO FAR!

Next you want to make 2 small dots (These are TOO LARGE) of both the artic silver heat transfer chemical, and the chemical epoxy. Using an object, mix them together. I just used the back of the carton for the RAMsinks, and used the back end of the stick they gave me. Keep a baby wipe or wet nap close by in case you get any artic silver on your skin/clothes.

5) Use your flat surface device (Small paint brush, library card, etc) to spread the mixture on EVENLY. You don't need much at all, just a small barrier between the chip and RAMsink, enough for the epoxy to hold the RAMsink in place. On this first one, I overdid it.

6) The mixture will dry when you finish positioning the RAMsink, so you have a good minute to get it exactly where you want it on the chip, then set it on a flat, even surface. Directions say it takes 5 mins to dry and seal, but I did it for 10 - 15.

7) And now for the back!

8) Covered with the epoxy. . .

9) And Viola! Done!

A few important notes:

-RAMsinks are proven to help reduce heat and breakdown of RAM on graphics cards by about 40%. They are also a valuable tool for someone looking to overclock their RAM by a small degree.

-The RAMsinks come in two sizes: standard and BGA. BGA is used on newer cards such as RADEON and GeForce, and it about 1/3 shorter in length than the standard.

-If you do this, you should not have a PCI card directly next to the AGP port. Even WITHOUT the RAMsinks, NO PCI card should be used directly next to the AGP port, that port should always be empty!
=================================================
More to follow guys when I get my next delivery! biggrin:

Nice pc. I try to build mine so that they are upgradable. I built mine 6-8 months ago and I still have several upgrades before I even think about upgrading the mobo. I need another 512 stick of ddr3200, a replacement for my xp2200 when the 333fsb xp's get to a more reasonable price and a new vid card to replace my ti4200 when a game comes out that requires it, maybe doom3. Not much point in upgrading before i need it, prices are always dropping. And again, sweet pc.

Just a quick update:

Before I upgrade my PC, I wanted to get some benchmarks on it, that way I can see just how much I improved. So, I got my demo version of MadOnion.com's 3DMark2001 SE. Here's my scores:

LOW QUALITY TEST
===============
1024X768, 32-bit color
D3D Pure Hardware T & L
Frame Buffer = Double
Z Buffer = 24
Anti-Aliasing = None
Compressed textures

SCORE: 8302

HIGH QUALITY TEST
================
1280X960, 32-bit color
D3D Pure Hardware T & L
Frame Buffer = Triple
Z Buffer = 24
Anti-Aliasing = 2x
32-bit Textures

SCORE: 6036

These scores are generally low. I believe when I first installed my PC, with minimal software, I scored a low 10000.
