Mind Over Matter

I had the honor of playing with one of the best trumpet players on the east coast. He believes in using the mind as a tool and think of the final product you want instead of the mechanics that get you to the final product. He told me one story which i found quite interesting:

His good friend works in a lab where they study the brain's effects on the body. There was a death case in which they had to figure out what the hell happened to the guy. The victim died during scuba diving. All of the equipment worked--there was enough air in the tank, the air came out properly. BUT, there was only ONE instrument that malfunctioned...guess what it was........

scroll down...

It was the guage that told them their air supply (the little wrist watch looking thing). It was stuck on the reading "EMPTY" and it caused the diver to believe that there was no oxygen in the tank even though THERE WAS A FULL TANK.

That really is freaky! The scientist figured out that your mind DOES have an effect on your body. They proved it was with negative thinking. I wonder if it works with positive thinking...............(i'll end with that thought)

i've been pondering this for quite some time. Its amazing what your brain can do. For example, I wanted to stay home from school one day a few years ago and told my mom i had a massive headache (even though i didnt). I kept up the act long enough and then pretty soon i started getting this splitting headache out of nowhere. Ever since I've tried many different things and its amazing what you can do if you make your brain work hard enough.

I've heard from many knowledgeable people about a theory where if you seriously think you're exercising (Which is very hard to do - Would require hypnotism) then, your muscles grow like they would if you really were exercising. I found that very fascinating.

Can't imagine why. There was a case - and it could very well be an urban myth - about a guy trapped in a Train-Freezer. He thought he was gonna freeze to death, and he did.

When he was found, turned out the in room temperature was not at "freezing" degrees, and the mans hurt still quit on itself.

It's not THAT far fethced to think that the brain can send impulses to the rest of your body based on what it THINKS is going on.

That's interesting.

Maybe oneday in the future, when scientests get a grip on this subject, we could kill ourselves by just thinking about it.

Coleman 03-26-2003 11:18 PM

maybe scientists can create something that will allow us to think of swimming or going on vaccation....like downloading memories...hm......Total Recall anyone?

sometimes in those cases (scuba man) your mind can trick your body... not really control it but trick you. in the heat of the moment u can easily panic, causing you to DIE or get HURT. i think the guy saw his gauge was at 0, and went into some kinda shock or panic.. causing him to freak out and think he was out of air. then he DIED and got HURT.

lol, i never heard that one before---that's creative.

Anyone else have any other "wierd" stories like that involving the mind?

I remember when i was like in 3rd grade i would always be able to know what people were going to say. I was like phycic for a few days biggrin:
I remember the teacher was talking about what she likes and i would be telling this one girl exactly wheat the teacher was about to say before she said it. Like i remember the teacher was saying what her favorite food was and i said baseball stadium hotdogs. And thats what it was! biggrin: It went on like that for a couple of days but i was so young i didnt notice how wierd it was. Now that i look back im just like ed:
Also one of my friends said that when he used to um, when he smoked some stuff ( biggrin: ) he saw his grandfathers death before it happened and he would always be able to tell the exact groceries his mom would bring before she would get home. I think our mind somewhere deep in there already knows what is to come. Somehow freak:

Like I said in the time travel post, we are only beginning to find out what makes the universe tick.

I wouldn't be surprised if Stargates and hyperspace travel are possible

03-27-2003 10:03 PM

I have also had strange premonitions about events and sometimes in class I can tell what the instructor/professor is about to say and then it feels like deja vu, but I know for a fact that whatever I heard was not discussed before

Miscguy 03-27-2003 10:13 PM

He probably just held his breath thinking that his tank was empty. Not so much mind over matter as it is faulty equipment triking the poor bastard.

If he was holding his breath when he passed out he would start breathing again by default, with the regulator still in his mouth he would breathe and wake up again.

CaP bUsTa 03-27-2003 10:17 PM

mabye he did hold his breath, but that cant be all of it. You cannot kill yourselve by holding your breath because of how breathing is a natural impusle. Try holding your breath for as long as possible and you'll realize that you will begin breathing again when your brain tells you to. So if he did hold his breath, he would have started breathing again and if he did, then we would still be alive. Our brains are are much more advanced than we think they are.
