Eh, it's a fun game, but I don't see the point. You play with the same amount of people that you would in a BF:1942 server, only you are charged by the month. Now you have to play a while and get experience to be what you want. I'll be skipping this one.

Bean 2 05-09-2003 02:50 PM

you dont have to pay for the beta right?

BZZZZT! WRONG!

Yes, its true that the game will require a monthly payment to play, which is a big downer, but rumors say it will only be about 5 - 10 dollars. And the fact about how many people you can play with? Max BF1942 server is 64 people. . .Planetside, has no limit. I was in a battle with 2,000 players. evil:

Gah, waiting in line for 7 hours, then waiting 14 hours to download doesn't appeal to me much.

Ferich 05-11-2003 08:30 PM

The only game I thought was worth paying monthly was WW2 Online, and what a sack of shit that turned out to be. oOo:

Sergeant_Scrotum 05-11-2003 08:31 PM

2000 people? thats gotta be a real cpu killer.

Ferich 05-11-2003 08:40 PM

Not really. That's why it costs money to play, the servers are amazing.

I just got the new trial, and it isn't bad, although I find it overwhelming. The only game I could see myself paying for is SW:G

Pyro 05-11-2003 09:29 PM

I think Sony hosts the games for people...

That's the great part about this game. The Specs are about the same as MOH. The only thing is you really shouldn't play this if you're a 56Ker, constant updates tend to be a bitch, along with the initial 1.35GB download! ed:

Don't be expecting to be playing with more than 64. My friend has the beta, and all we do is fight in 20 player skirmishes. Sure it's fun, but I have yet to see anything that sets this miles above any other FPS out.

What the hell are you talking about?! I just said I was in a battle with almost 2000 people AT ONCE! We all populated the Cyssor Continent, but then they put the 400 player max filter on each continent.

I DLed the beta and tried it for a bit just to see how it plays.

The netcode seems sturdy enough (despite me being 2k miles away and 160 odd ping). It was smooth enough.

But, and this is a big but, there's no way my PC will be able to handle more than 20-30 players in local vicinity at once, especially near the larger structures.

There was one point where two players attacked me and it was in front of a structure owned by them so I expected to die (lowly rank 3 me with basic starting weapons and on my own) but what horrified me was the disgusting FPS lag.

Inside it runs just fine and I could imagine myself spending the money per month to get into this game (Hell, I am still paying for 2 EQ accounts right now that I hardly ever play anymore, and I played that game for years).

But, I won't have the time so there's little point.

No matter how easy it is to get into battle quickly this will not be a game for the casual gamer.

If it's anything like EQ you'll be spending more time LFS (looking for squad) than anything else. Medics and hackers will get squads really easilly and frontline players will not (similar to Clerics, Enchanters and Warriors in EQ).

Eventually the game will be dominated by one particular Outfit (or clan) who spend 23 hours a day playing and there will be very little point in playing casually.

There is no "low level game" in Planetside (unlike EQ). So you either get dedicated or you die. Lots.

So, not for me.

Meh, I'm waiting for HL2.
