going skydiving for the first time!!!

Tomorrow, I will be at the Winnipeg Skydiving centre for my 5hrs of ground school training at 9am. Then the actual jump.... Has anyone here gone through this? I'm getting more antsy as tomorrow approaches. I rented the first 4 parts of BoB from Rogers vid to see how they trained for the jump.... even Cpt Sobel was squemish on his first jump!

Vance 05-16-2003 08:01 PM

Skydiving is a little bit different than a PLF wink:

That's going to be a rush. Enjoy the high. biggrin:

Vance 05-16-2003 08:23 PM

Oh and make sure to pack your reserve chute.

Ferich 05-16-2003 08:25 PM

That'd be funny if underware and sandwhiches came out of your chute.

con Brio 05-16-2003 08:35 PM

has anyone here actuallly gone?

Ferich 05-16-2003 08:38 PM

Everyone has, everyone is in the 82nd Airborne or knows someone who is on this Forum.

Expect an answer like..

"YES, MY DAD SEARVED IN THE 82ND AIRBORNE IN THE WAR OF 1812, HE PARACHUTED 69 TIMES AND KILLED 7 CAMBODIANS. HE HAS THE MEDAL OF HONOR."

But honestly though, I've skydived once and hated it, never will do it again. I did it when I went to Austraila for a College trip type thing.

were u freakin out before actually exiting the plane 3000 ft in the air?

Ferich 05-16-2003 08:52 PM

No, I was strangely calm during most of that, I just didn't like most of the falling. It felt like I was extremely depressed, lol, you know the feeling in your stomach.... Oh well, some people call it a rush or a "high," I just call it a waste of time.

Vance 05-16-2003 09:04 PM

Yeah, I jumped with the 152nd Airborne Squad into Eastern Iran. Its not as fun as it is hyped up to be. But I got the Iron Cross for bravery under Freindly Fire. SO ti all evened out, plus I had a great CO, John Milla.

Oh God Ferich, i just cant stop laughing biggrin:

But when my dad was in Vietnam, in trraining, he went parachuting, and he said it was really scary, even though this was in peace time. You do exactly what they said in BoB, and when you jump from the static line, if your chute doesnt open, you have 3-4 seconds to pull your reserve, or else youre too low for it to deploy correctly, which can either severly injure you from breaking your legs, or kill you. But i hope you have fun! Forgive your sins before you go, you never know what will happen freak:

i'm still laughing about the sandwiches and underwear biggrin:

gtboys34 05-16-2003 10:27 PM

I skydived once, but I did a tandem jump. If you are doing five hours of ground school, you are probably going to do a solo? Its a hell of a rush. I wasnt nervous at all until they opened the door at 12k feet. Then I got nervous all at once, but I didnt have very long to think about it. The free fall was the best part, but its over in a blink. The parachute ride down gives you a chance to catch your breath.

con Brio 05-17-2003 06:10 AM

christ, it's now 7am in the morning.....

2 hours til jump school......

Vance 05-17-2003 06:49 AM

Godspeed! biggrin:

05-17-2003 09:29 AM

remember! always check your chute to see if there's underwear and lunch in it

con Brio 05-17-2003 05:36 PM

I DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Holy crap!!!!!!!!! What an experience!!!! I don't care what all of the others say about skydiving, whether it being a mediocre experience or what, but WOW!!!!! I recommend that all of you guys here do it!

We had a jump school on the ground which lasted about 4 hours - we had a break in the middle for lunch. After writing a little quiz on what we learned (i got 29 out of 31), we geared up.

We go to choose our own jumpsuits from a variety, and lucky for me, i found a German paratrooper jumpsuit among the suits! It was a camo suit, with the german striped flag on the shoulder with a ton of zipper pockets. I tell u, i felt like a paratrooper. The actual jump was amazing. The scariest part was standing underneath the wing exposed to all that wind..... when i let go, my adrenaline skyrocketed, then my chute deployed after like 3 seconds, and i drifted peacefully to the ground while YELLING AND SCREAMING in elation! YAAAAAA!!!! IT WAS AWESOME!

Now i got to wait til thursday to obtain a copy of the video of our jump.

Pyro 05-17-2003 06:07 PM

how much did all this cost

Vance 05-17-2003 06:20 PM

How high up were you? 3 seconds of freefalling doesnt seem very high.......

con Brio 05-17-2003 07:37 PM

it cost $107 cdn. and i was in the air for almost 1.5 minutes.... we were 3000 ft in the air... it was an experience i will never forget!

con Brio 05-17-2003 07:37 PM

thats $107 including the jump and first jump IAD school

1080jibber 05-17-2003 08:07 PM

con Brio 05-17-2003 08:37 PM

seriously??? thats like $70 american

Oddball 05-18-2003 04:11 AM

I've thought about learning to sky dive, but tell me about packing your own chute.

Is it hard to fold up and hard to remember. I think that would be the scariest thing of all, talking yourself into thinking that you made a mistake folding your chute.

con Brio 05-18-2003 11:07 PM

well, if it's your first jump, obviously, the qualified instructors will be doing the packing...... duh biggrin:

Simo Häyhä 05-18-2003 11:31 PM

oh im sorry timmy i accidentally put my silverware in your parachute bag
