PS3 - What power!
[quote:eaa88]
Source - http://gamespot.com/gamespot/storie...2908225,00.html The Cell processor, which will form the heart of the PlayStation 3, will use a new high-speed memory interface following a deal between Sony, Toshiba, and Rambus. Sony and Toshiba have licensed technology from Rambus that likely will be incorporated into a future version of the Sony game console. The two Japanese giants have licensed "Yellowstone," a high-speed interface for connecting memory to microprocessors, and "Redwood," a chip-to-chip connection, from the processor designer, the companies said. Both Yellowstone and Redwood would be used to enhance the broadband capabilities of "Cell," a complex microprocessor that will likely power an upcoming version of Sony's PlayStation. Cell, which is expected to come out in late 2004 or early 2005, substantially differs from current chips on the market. Developed by IBM, Sony, and Toshiba, the processor will contain multiple chips inside a single piece of silicon and will be geared toward delivering video, entertainment, interactive gaming, and other content. It will have the ability to do north of 1 trillion mathematical calculations per second, roughly 100 times more than a single Pentium 4 chip running at 2.5GHz. Chips churning at that speed, though, need to be surrounded by high-speed links and similarly speedy chips to function properly, which is where Yellowstone and Redwood come in. Yellowstone can transfer data up to 100 gigabits per second, or three times faster than current high-speed memory, said Laura Stark, vice president of the memory interface group at Rambus. In the end, the two technologies will allow chips to exchange audio or graphics data extremely rapidly, the companies said. "Rambus is and will be the key player in the ultra high-speed interface technology," Ken Kutaragi, chief executive officer of Sony Computer Entertainment, said in a statement. "This enables us to create a wide range of applications and platforms, from high-end systems to digital consumer-electronics products within Sony." The deal, which is expected to bring Rambus $28 million in revenue over the next 18 months, also in some ways marks the beginning of a new, or third, life for the controversial chip designer. [/quote:eaa88] Sounds like a helluva calculator to me, and I found a "pic" of it.. wink: |
lol...I heard about this "concept" designs for PS3 a long time ago
if peoiple actually believe that that will be the ending design is on crack |
weird
|
Hmm...This should cost $700.
|
very true, think the pic is real or fake?
|
fake for sure...they are still working on the chip...why would htye ahve a final design worked out yet
|
Pyro, I took the liberty of making you a sig, took me 0.5 seconds, use it, don't, I won't lose sleep over it.

no, you are, im ur official disciple from now on
|
I just read two days ago that the information about the processor was leaked, and cannot be confirmed if true yet. I wonder what you need to do to keep the cells on the processor alive. oOo:
|
Yeah they cant have that done yet.
|
if the pic is fake or not, it still looks smooth
|
i think it looks retarded.... too.. spacey or something, i like the black and blue look better, but thats just my opinion
|
those controllers are fucking huge
|
geezsus people still play console games? i gave that shit up like 6 years ago, the games sucked, the graphics sucked the whole thing sucks. hell my puter is better than a ps3 anyday
|
Fine, the machine can bench press 500 thousand pounds: can it deliver
great games ? Developers, do your thang... |
I think I'll wait for a PS3 emulator. oOo:
|

LOL I hope you won't be waiting for too long biggrin: |

Why don't you invent one, dude? You seem to be good at that stuff, right? |

How can you compare your computer to something that doesn't exist, yet? |
Because he is ignorant. You can't possibly say your PC will be better than any next-gen consoles. Now in my opinion I find my PC to be more fun than my PS2, but I have played some really fun games for PS2 before. Gameplay over graphics, man.
|
by the time they crank that out PC will be what?
5GHZ processor? 3GB RAM? 1GB graphics card? I think Intel has nipped the EDIT: Watch the racial slurs. biggrin: |
continuation of rant:
also I do not see why you need such graphics power when your output is a regular TV oOo: unless you buy one of those $2000 plasma screen monsters the PS3 would be using 95% of it's power for details that will be grainy anyways. |
i think the cooling system will have to be up to par on this bad boy..if the info is true that is oOo:

Also we never know what Intel is working on, because they don't announce a new chip until it's ready for release. Sony has to announce early, since many of their patrons are teens they need save-their-money/beg-their-parents time before it comes out biggrin: |

6 years ago... How is that cocoon you're living in? Cosy? I don't believe any of this hype, by the way. I never bought a PS2 or Gamecube or Xbox. Nice toys to own but I can't afford to pay the money for them and the games when they have finite longetivity. In the time I've owned a PC (since 1998) I have only bought around 4-5 games and I've never been bored of it, only having to upgrade it two times, each time costing approximately £200 ($320 or so). If I had been a console fan I'd have probably bought around 50 games (at around £30 each - that's £1500) and 3 consoles (at approximately £200 each, that's £600. Plus that would be without all of the other bonuses you get with a PC - Downloading video, MP3s, porn, communication, demos, forums (nooo!), Kazaa/Imesh/IRC and so on. If I had the money I'd go out and buy the consoles. But I don't. So I won't. |
Its fake becuase ps3 doesnt come out till 2005 and i dont think they could have come out with a case already. eek:
|
Yo dawgs, i not sure if tis is da real tang, aight?

they had a prototype for a ps3 a few years ago that was basically about 7 ps2s hooked up to each other and was ran with a computer. biggrin:
|
well x-box2 will be better that it

So bill gates is going to spoil himself again with another system.
