Landmines?
Do you guys think that landmines should be banned by the Geneva Convention for future wars?
I say yes, because Landmines are a very dangerous threat to civilians. Every now and then on the news, you'll hear that some one had their leg blown off or were killed by a landmine in Africa or something. These weapons were forgotten about and are later triggered by civilians. I mean, from WWII, some Germans plant mines in an apple orchard where they think there will be heavy allied movement. Turns out they were wrong, and no one steps on them for 50 years. Then, Little susie, Little Billy, Mommy and Daddy are walking through that apple orchard for a picnic. Little Susie steps on an S-Mine, it pops up, blows up, spreading marble sized shrapnel pieces everywhere, killing all 4 of them. This is why i think landmines should be banned, because after the war is over, those things are still killing people, except these people have no intent to kill and are innocent |
Mines are a fucking horrible weapon.
|
I thought they already banned it. Along with napalm, flamethrowers and fletchet/beehive rounds.
|
Yes, landmines are already banned under International law.

Think of an artillery shell filled with thousands of little nails with fins. When it goes off it literally nailed the victims to the nearest object.
|
oh shit, my dad was attacked by one in Vietnam. He even beought home 3 or 4 of the nails. I have seen them and had pics, maybe ill take some later...
|
thats wrong......
|
whoa, let me rephrase.
oh shit, my dad told me about those. He was once in a shelling with one of those. He brought home some of the little nails, about 3 or 4. I've seen them and they must hurt in great quantities. Maybe ill take some pics and upload them |

ah, let me rephrase again. Sorry, its 0431 and im running on Coke and Hershey's bars
My dad used them in a shelling before because he was artillery for the 1st Air Cav (i think, ill ask later today). He had found some of the little things and brought them home. Man, i wouldnt like to be caught in that barrage |
FF did happen in Nam, didnt we sometimes Napalm our own troops by mistake?
|
Alot actually. It happened alot.
|
yes, there was a lot. There was also something called "fraggng" which you can see in Platoon, where soldiers would kill their platoon or squad leader so they wouldnt have to go on a patrol

It's called Fragging, my Uncle was part of the 1st Cavalary, he worked with, and fixed chopper helicopters, he was also a normal soldier, went on gun runs, and sweeper missions, guard duty, and he fought.

Cavalry

Totally off topic, but my uncle was in Vietnam and he told me a funny story.
He was staioned at a firebase somewhere over there. anyways, these guys had to take the 50 gallon drums of shit from the outhouses and haul them to the dump to be buried. He said they got lazy and just hauled them to the edge of the clearing where they proceeded to blow up the shit cans with explosives. The shit apparently blew all over the surrounding jungle canopy and when the wind blew the whole base reeked of shit. The solution to get rid of the smell? They called in a napalm strike to fry the trees of all the human waste that was covering them. Needless to say, the guys that created that mess lost some stripes as punishment. |
it all depends....
i've placed a few landmines out the front of my house evil: |
I think the US refused to sign the latest ban or something oOo:
why do we need mines , we basically smash anything that moves from the air now anyways. |
I dont think they banned them. I was watching Mail Call and they talked about this new type of land mine that can find a target and shit and then pack up if its not used.
|
yes, a huge list of countries sighned a paper saying they would nolonger make landmines, almost all of the major countries signed....except the US. your goverment is run by basterds... hake:

Oh shutup, name one incident where the U.S. has used landmines after Vietnam. |
We should ban them as well, I mean when was the last time a country fought us with human wave attacks? Vietnam? We needed them back now now we have the technology to just obliterate any human wave stuff.
|
I think they should also ban the use of bombs, rockets, missles, explosives, poisions, guns, knifes, swords, projectile launchers, and any other lethal weapon. Then arm each soldier with the latest version of the technilogical masterpiece, a rock. Then gather all the soldiers from each country and put them in a giant arena and have them fight until every country, except one, surrenders.
That is the future of warfare. |

I think I saw that one. Wasnt it an anti armor mine? IF I recall the mines are magnetic and have a small computer that scans the target. If it registaers as enemy they will blow it up but if it come back ans neutral or enemy it disarms and wats for a target. Anyways. Mines are bad. Should htey be banned? I dont know. SO what they kill pople. so do grenades, and artillery, and missles. all of those usually have at least one misshape that kills a civ. |
I see nothing wrong with using anti-tank mines to blow out tank tracks or even APCs. War is war, and even with the Geneva convention, soldiers do not follow the uniformed code that they are to abide by in war.

yeah, but anti-tank mines don't blow up unless an at least 20 ton vehicle rolls over them, we're talking about the pesky anti-personnell type that are triggered by soldiers, women, small children, dogs, cats and just about anything else that moves on the ground. |

I've heard of them being used a lot, actually. I think their main use today (for the US anyway) is protection around the perimeter of a firebase or fortified position of our troops. They're all marked and are removed afterward. |
they're used to protect area 51
|
whats the point of marking landmines?
"Warning intruders, dont step there, there, or over there" oOo: |

most obvious question ..EVER |
so theyre gonna have a big sign that says "Danger, Landmines"? Im sure thats gonna help
