Building new rig.....thoughts?
Ok, here's the dillio.
Arkan has a grand to build himself a new rig. Here's what i came up with so far. Intel P4 2.6 Ghz (800 FSB) Intel D875PBZ DDR 400 (i875 Canterwood) Mobo Enermax ATX Tower Case (Full Tower) Enermax 460W Power Supply 1GB (2 pcs 512) DDR 400 Corsair RAM Western Digital 80Gig H/D 8MB Cache 7200 Asus 52x CD-ROM Plextor 48X CD/RW Mitsumi Floppy 7-in-1 USB card reader/s 24" ATA133 Round Cable All components are black for that stealthy look. All other components like video card (Radeon 9500 Pro), sound card (SoundBlasterLive), etc, etc will come from my old system. What do you think of it so far? I'm trying to get the best bang for the buck. |

We gotta be stealthy to steal hubcaps. oOo: I need to upgrade in a bad way I think, but I'm so goddamned cheap that I cant justify a purchase if my shit is running fine - and it is. Although I was tempted to get a 200gig WD HD for 120 bucks (after 150 dollar rebate). |

Well, just ordered my parts. They should be here next week. I'm gonna move the old system (Athlon 1.48 GHz, 384M RAM) into the den and hook it up to the net via linksys router. I'll then give my old Intel 650 to my Mom so she can e-mail and browse the net. (I'm sure i'll be over her place alot to teach her since she'll be a n00b)
As for the guy who asked about my video card, i posted in the original thread that i'm carrying over my Radeon 9500 Pro. I don't think it's necessary for me to update the card at this time. She runs just fine and i'm sure it'll handle HL2. ....now, it's a waiting game for the UPS guy !! |
your new stuff is pretty good, are you over clocking the ram, and the processor?

you mentioned overclockin the processor jdogsmooooth, how safe is it to do something like that, won't you need a big wind turbine to cool it down after overclocking?
Can anyone overclock, what about graphics cards? just my processor is a P4 1.5GHz and got a geforce FX5200 *twiddles thumbs* I ain't takin no unnecessary risks th0! Good luck with your new system Arkan, tho i hear 1 in 5 UPS drivers crash and die during transport |
Arkan,
Don't get a flatscreen. The refresh-rate is shitty for gaming and you won't like it... trust me. Their only "good" for saving on space for office work. |
Ok, as for overclocking, nope, not gonna be doing that with the new system. I have an old system i can fool with but i'll leave the new one alone.
Thanks for the monitor advise. I'm not ready to upgrade anyway because i'm trying to keep costs down. I'm sure they'll come out with a flat screen thats good for gaming in the future so i'll wait. I'll let you know how the rig goes together once i get my parts. |

I know a guy that dropped a grand on a big lcd that was adverstised as fine for gaming. He ended up taking it to work and refuses to talk about it now. LCDs may work for games eventually, but I wouldnt be the guy that buys the 1st "good for gaming" model. |
"1GB (2 pcs 512) DDR 400 Corsair RAM "

well, usually the only time you need to over clock is when ur computer lags, but if you were to do so cooling would help.
the reason i asked was because i think the ddr 400 and the 800 fsb P4 are good for over clocking |

But i'm talking about TFT's, and those are totally diffirent from LCD's. They don't use Crystals but instead something else (can't remember what it is right now tho) and therefore they are also a LOT more expensive. A 15" TFT screen costs about 200-400 bucks depending on the manufacturer. The only issue with TFT's is that the resolution isn't the best (on a 15" TFT max resolution is 1024x768). But other then that they are quite good for gaming. Not as good as a big ol' CRT screen but still very game-friendly happy: |
