Agreed. In terms of feel, page was the man.

If you want speed download yngwie malmsteen. You would be able to listen to it for more than around 5 minutes, mainly because its so fast and gets annoying really quickly, either that or because the whole songs like one large repition of the same 3 notes throughout the same meaningless song. But what do I know, hes a virtuouso oOo: IF virtuoso means youre a guitar player that plays with no feeling what so ever then Michael Angelo of nitro is one too.

Johnj 02-03-2004 04:12 AM

Oh yea Check out anything from Ten Years After (not the current lineup).

trey anastasio is my favorite, but probs not the best ever

i dont know how many ppl are into phish, but i think its incredible how he just makes these crazy long solos off the top of his head cool:

SoLiDUS 02-03-2004 11:08 PM

Of the top of his head ? Nah...

It's like rappers doing "freestyle" battles: they have hundreds of rhymes
already prepared and they just try to mix'n'match appropriately and hope
it falls into place properly. Your guitarist probably experimented with many
different combinations and added them up together in an sensical order.

Still, it takes a lot of talent to do it so props to them! rock:

whydidigetbanned 02-04-2004 12:09 AM

of course trey knows the usual scales, progressions, etc

i play guitar, and i know of a fair amount, but it doesnt mean anything if you cant put it all together

plus his guitar is a custom made work of God himself; the hollow body of the guitar is made so perfectly, it gives him the power of unlimited sustain on harmonics and high notes, so he can make cool noises while he decides what to do next! rock:

check out nugs.net for some free phish and other jam band shows...i like moe. the most personally, if anyone knows of them.

No, that's not it at all. I've been a guitar player for 17 years and over that time I've come to appreciate a whole spectrum of players from Chet Atkins to Buddy Guy to Pat Metheny to Tom Morello to Joe Satriani.

I can spot guitar prowess, I mean pure guitar virtuosity, pretty innately by now...and my friend, Jack White is not a great guitar player.

well i respect your musically-experienced opinion, as long as you've actually heard him. but i, and i also play guitar (clearly not for 17 years), do think he's one of the best.... i have to go to class now

Even if you like the White Stripes...Jack white is not even CLOSE to EVER being regarded one of the best.

of all time, of course not... but of people and living and still playing well today, he's definately one of the best (and this thread has nothing to do with best of all time... it says best in the world). I'm not going to make any claims that Jack White is better then Hendrix or Page or any of the other legends, but of his generation he is the best.

and if you think this is just my opinion, go pick up any copy of nearly any respected music magazine... spin, rolling stone, whatever...
