RAM Question
I have an ASUS A7N8X-X motherboard with 2 sticks of 184 pin 256mb DDR pc2100.
The motherboard has room for 3 sticks. Is it possible to say buy another stick of 512mb or 1gb of pc 3200 for the third slot? So I guess the question is, is one able to mix and match ram speeds? |
id say so. btw I have the same mb. I like it. Had any problems with yours?
|
I just got it yesterday. So far so good, though.
My ECS K7S5A blew up on tuesday. |

I added diff sized ram and had no problems, one thing pointed out to me when buying it tho is the
ram speed will be limited to the lowest stick, so an extra 512mb/pc3200 will = 512mb/pc2100 ...or so I'm told...anyways, you'll have at least have doubled your ram and it's all good. EDIT: LOL! biggrin: ...paused mid post to batten down teh hatches as a major thunderstorm hits... only to see Mr.Buttocks has already popped out that nugget of info...GG Buttocks!! beer: |
No, I haven't bought any RAM as of yet. I was just always curious and it's good to know these things for the future.
Thanks guys. I appreciate it. |
check how much ram your MOBO can support. Dont g oover that amount. Example. Mine supports up to 1gb of ram. I have 740mb DDR running in it.
|
well, i have a RAM question of my own, sorry to "hijack" your thread ninty9, but i think its pretty much the same topic.
Im getting a new computer in a few months, totally custom. money isnt too much of a factor, as long as its not astronomical. im planning on getting a nice motherboard (also debating a 64bit processor, which affects the motherboard type) but my main question is what would be a good motherboard and best type of RAM? im planning on gaming and photoshopping on the computer, so it should be able to handle HL2 etc. |
DDR
Kingston makes some good ram |
hmmm, thanks.
i've heard good things about Corsair also... |
my mobo holds 3gb and AMD 3000+ or higher. I think that should be good for now.
|
I have the deluxe model of that Mobo, great board..it should be able to handle it no problem, only thing is the faster RAM will clock itsself down to match up with the 2100... i have 1152MB of 2100 in mine and it runs great.

1GB of Kingston Hyper-x PC3200 FLYS.
(2 512 sticks in Dual channel mode) |

Mushkin is the best.... then Corsair XMS...
|
everything is good...lol
dont mix and match ram speeds. |
mix and matching ram speeds is ok- as long as you get the best performance
if your system can only handle Pc-2100 DDR get like the pc-2700 or something because it's compatable to go at the highest the system will take it don't mix brands because that can lead to problems |
I'd Go Corsair
|
hell no. crucial is by far the best memory manufacturer. I just bought a gig of corsair 1gig pc3200 and ended up taking it back tonight because my computer kept rebooting on itself. so i put my old ram in, which happens to be crucial and no problems what so ever. tomorrow im buying a gig of pc3200 from crucial.
