To tell the truth - My Uncle, who gave me all of his old tapes when I was like 5.....They were all Hiphop, De La Soul, Eric B & Rakim etc.
I went through a rock phase, instigated by Pearl Jam and Faith No More. But I don't listen to much other music outside of urban music genres these days. |

I got my first guitar when I was 13. It was an Eddie Van Halen look-alike from Sears. Iron Maiden, Motley Crue, Van Halen...all were huge influences and springboards for my musical ventures.
Biggest influences since then have been Iron Maiden (and always will be a source of inspiration), Metallica ("...And Justice For All" was huge with me in high school), and some celtic acts like Stan Rogers, Great Big Sea, and Shanneyganock. I grew up on that irish/newfoundland/celtic stuff...it's in my blood. |

well i lissend to alot of stuff: jazz, soul, funk, hiphop, rock, pop, hardrock, and all kinds of those too. |
I never was influenced by anyone but coincidently when i play guitar it sounds weird and odd kind of like Brian Benoit from Dillinger Escape Plan or if i'm tired and want to sit back i'll just bust out some slow ambient music (Gary Larsen).

When I was like 7 I liked Elvis, then he died and I found Kiss, wanted to be Paul Stanley.

comming from a classical background, may I ask if any of these musicians you all idolize know anything about theory or what they actually are doing? I might go into music composition in college, and i was wondering if these guys were atually 'that smart' to make their music. Right now, I've taken 2 years of Music theory in my highschool. We've analyzed alot of music and it seems to me that none of these guys were great.
But don't get me wrong here...I'm not dissing any of these guitarists or whathaveyou. Sometimes, it's the simplist stuff that sounds the best to the ear--that's why alot of you can play much of your favorite songs. Tabs has also helped the spread of the music to the average person. I'm big into jazz and I mostly like them as musicians because they all know theory behind chords and countless modes/scales/cliches/phrases that they use in improvisations. Not too many people can play solos of the great jazz musicians. Again, don't get me wrong. I was just wondering if these guys really know what they are playing. |
