Running For President
Now, I am definetly not planning to run for president, but I have been doing some thinking. To be able to run for president, you must be born in america. But isnt america a country where everyone is equal? Isnt america the country that people go to because they wanted to be treated equally and fairly? Doesnt the US constitution promise equal rights, and chances to suceed to all citizens of the United States, no matter what color their skin is, what religion they practice, or what country they come from? So then why is this a requirement. I will use myself as an example. I moved from Russia to America when I was 2. I dont remember anything about it. So why cant I run? This is of course, hypothetically speaking.

I suppose its a loyalty thing; but I've known of many immigrants who became far more loyal to the US than they were to their former country.
Hell, how many Irish who were in the US for no more than a couple of years joined up to fight in the Civil War? Also, we had a recent debate about this topic on aa.com when Arnold Shwarzenegger was talking about the posibility of changing this rule. I believe that "the usual suspects" spewed idiotic childish insults at anyone who sided with Arnie, calling the anti-american, etc. etc. |

I must have missed the Arnie disscussion, but I would wholeheartedly vote for him if he ever ran. rock: |
The rule was made early in our countrys history and stated that anybody that ran for president, that wasn't in the USA when the constitution was ratified, would have to be born in the USA. It is the only office with such a rule. I think it is a good rule.

Honestly, I think immigrants are more appreciated of what they have then the people who were born into it.

The following paragraph doesnt say everything I would have liked but I have a doctors appointment to go to and I dont feel like being late. GG "No person shall (a) withhold, deny, or attempt to withhold or deny, or deprive or attempt to deprive, any person of any right or privilege secured by section 201 or 202, or (b) intimidate, threaten, or coerce, or attempt to intimidate, threaten, or coerce any person with the purpose of interfering with any right or privilege secured by section 201 or 202, or (c) punish or attempt to punish any person for exercising or attempting to exercise any right or privilege secured by section 201 or 202." I think that covers the right to be treated equally. rock: |
