obtaining a credit card

ok, ive been trying to get a credit card for a while and each application I apply for I get denied, I don't know why. I lie, like most people do on a credit card form to get one. but I still cant get it. I have a job, only have two bills to pay, which are nothing and I give my parents $60/month for room and board. I've been turned down at least 4 times and each time I get denied, any little credit I have, goes down, and my parents had some issues with a bank and now they dont have a credit card so I cannot co-sign with them. I dont go to college or university (at the moment) so I dont have one handed right to me. now I just applied again for a card and told them my monthly income was $1300, which is a lie. i make much less than that. I really need a credit card, it would help me and be alot more convienent, plus I plan on buying a car later this year, and im pretty sure I'll need a credit card.

so what are some other methods of obtaining a credit card that you guys know of?

[DAS REICH] Blitz 03-04-2005 08:25 PM

Lieing isn't a good way to get what you want. eek:

well, I don't think putting down what I really make monthly would be any help at all.

Yeah, lying is for satan.

ninty 03-04-2005 08:30 PM

why do you need a credit card.

i really can't understand why people want them when they don't have the money to pay for stuff. Do people really like paying 18% interest or whatever it is? I guess sometimes their required for people living on their own who need to pay rent and things are tight, .

I have a credit card that I use for internet purchases. I always pay it off and i've never missed a payment. Never payed any interest. When I first got it they gave me a $500 limit. They bumped it up to $1300 now. I don't really need that much because the most my card has ever been was probably $400.

Anyway, i don't think you can get one without co signing which you said you can't do. looks like your screwed.

ninty 03-04-2005 08:35 PM

oh, missed that part. oOo:

your going to put a car on your credit card? oOo:

I've had my card for 2 years and I have a 1300 limit. I doubt if you get a card now you'd have a high enough limit to buy a car with. I've bought 2 cars in my lifetime without a credit card.

And why would you put a car on a card anyway? you can't really pay it all off at the same time, then you'd be paying interest on it. doesn't make sense...or am i missing something?

tomxtr 03-04-2005 08:37 PM

First of all, don't lie. Secondly, make sure that you are current with all your obligations. If you're missing payments that are in your name, that will show up on your credit report. Also, realize that the more that you apply for credit, loans, etc. that can hurt your overall credit score. Each time that your credit report is pulled from one of the 3 major companies in charge of that shit, it counts against you. That is of course you all applications are made within a close period of time for the same thing; mortgage or car loan for example.

Sounds like you should stay away from a credit card. If you don't have the coin to pay for stuff outright, it'll just get you in trouble.

If you really need one for the convenience of ordering shit and that kind of thing, your best bet is to call one of these companies and see what they can do for you. Its to easy to just deny your application.

Good luck.

Usually having a credit card boosts your credit rating so you can get a better loan from the bank. I might be wrong I dont know.

Jin-Roh 03-04-2005 08:40 PM

I had a $213 bill from all the World War II books I ordered. Took me about 7 months to pay it. biggrin:

I wonder if that makes things bad. oOo:

Duke_of_Ray 03-04-2005 08:41 PM

I am going to get a credit card for internet purchases only, hate those bloody things.

I never ssaid I was going to buy a car with a credit card, but im sure a credit card is required when purchasing a car to show some kind of reference. and I dont plan on using it for major pruchasing, Im very careful with my money. just having the credit card itself, helps.

If you're getting a card to build a credit history, then good for you go for it. Just don't be a dumbass and make the minimum payment. You'll be asshole deep in debt before you know it. You'll see, as soon as you get one card and you at least make a minimum payment, you'll get solitiations from every financial institution under the sun. They don't like guys like myself or ninty9, because we're using them for a 30 day interest free loan. Guys who don't pay their balances are who they want

The car deal; most dealerships will not let you put any portion of a car on a credit card. I wouldn't even entertain that thought.

philadelphia killing mach 03-04-2005 08:54 PM

if you have a SS# you have a credit history. people can lie all they want, credit histories catch'em every time. when i was a car salesman we used to drop at some of the shit people would write and then compare it to the history report.

9mm BeRetTa 03-04-2005 08:58 PM

I don't think you need a credit card when buying a car...just a bank check stating that they know you got the money or something.

I wouldn't know, I use cash for everything.

If you have an ATM Card can't you use that over the interweb? My ATM card has a mastercard symbol on it, I haven't used it this entire year I've had it but I think it works like a regular card, but it docks money from your savings account.

philadelphia killing mach 03-04-2005 08:58 PM

they still do a credit check.

Drew 03-04-2005 09:07 PM

Just going to weigh in on this.. I deal with finances every day so I've gathered a bit of knowledge on the subject...

First of all, forget the idea of putting a car on a credit card. It's ridiculous.

With that out of the way, there are only two good reasons to have a credit card: building credit and emergencies. You should never get a credit card because you want something and don't have the money to front for it. You'll regret it later when you're making payments and not doing anything but knock off the accrued interest.

If your interest is building credit, I suggest applying for a Capital One card (they are the easiest creditor to get approval from without making a deposit or paying an annual fee) and ONLY paying for a single expense with it. For instance, when I was sixteen, I only used the card to pay for my gas. I would pay this off before the end of the grace period (usually 20-25 days) and never accrue interest on it (my first card had a 19% interest rate oOo: ). This way you're not wasting your money on interest and you also build your credit score.

When determining credit scores, there are only a few main things at which they look. The number of accounts you have, the number of recent inquiries on your credit, the credit limits on your revolving accounts and whether or not you have been paying on time. Contrary to popular belief, spending more money on your card and paying it back down does not increase your credit score.

There are a lot of really good reasons to build your credit, especially if you are interested in buying a car or a house in the future. If you have great credit (it takes 3-4 years to build, be patient) you can get that awesome 0% APR for 60 months on a car or finance a house with no down payment.

So there you go. beer:

Bucknub 03-04-2005 09:10 PM

ok, for the record I wasnt going to buy a car with a credit card, I just thought it was something required when purchasing a car.

and all I really want it for is to build up my credit.

philadelphia killing mach 03-04-2005 09:38 PM

seriously , if you want a quick way to build up credit do this:

1. get a sears card (yeah the interest in out the ass)
2. buy something big with it (any major appliance ie washer dryer, but not small electronics ie. dvd player) basically anything totalling over 300.00 and having continued value over a five year period
3. pay it off complete

takes time but builds credit. if you're young (18-25) you're allready screwed, sorry. having a credit card means nothing today to financial loaners, everyone has one and americans are known to abuse them saddly.

oOo:

Size of purchase and/or money changing hands has absolutely nothing to do with your credit score. Maybe if you purchased a 60" HDTV for $3,000 and financed it without a revolving line of credit, it would do something. But if you get a Sears card it works on your credit the same way as anything else.

Remember.. size of purchase doesn't matter. All that matters is that your account remains active (at some point during every month your card should carry a balance, but you should pay it off before the end of the month) and that you pay on time.

Himmler 03-05-2005 02:37 AM

dude just open up a checking account and get a atm/debit/check card all in one. i have one, and i can use it on the net, paypal, and in person. i can use it as a "credit" card or a debit card whichever i want in person. it is much better then a cc at the moment for me because it actually takes the money right out of my checking accnt and i dont have tow orry about paying it off or bills of any sort. trust me, at your age it is the way to go.

Mr.Buttocks 03-05-2005 09:52 AM

Come live in the UK - they hand out credit cards like sweeties over here.

Art Attack 03-05-2005 10:18 AM

rofl, while reading this thread like 5 credit card pop ups appeared.

geRV 03-05-2005 10:21 AM

You're probably better off to apply to your bank for a debit card, people get credit cards then get themselves into a fuckload of debt. Debit cards you can use online plus you can only spend what you have available so no getting yourself in shit owing money left right and center.

Nyck 03-05-2005 10:53 AM

Credit cards will fucking own you...Im 7 and a half Gs in debt thanks to them.

Had them pretty much all paid off, then my gramps died, then had to use it for his funeral, then I bought a couple cpu, school supplies/books all that shizzle.

Yay for me annoy:

Milla 03-05-2005 12:10 PM

Fuck, i was given a credit card right out of bootcamp.....Its a good thing, but its a bad thing to. You just keep charging shit to it oOo:

Yea what Gerard and Himmler said. Go with a debit card. I have one and you can use it basically the same as a credit card. It just takes money out of your bank account. No interest or anything either. If i want more money on it, i just deposit more in the bank. Its good for emergencies and online purchases. Plus its more secure than just carrying cash around.

descry 03-05-2005 07:00 PM

buying a car with a credit card would fuck over the dealership.

Pyro 03-05-2005 07:05 PM

your parents make you pay room and board...don't say like much of parents to me.

but if you offered the money on your own, iwthout them asking, then good for you man.

harpua 03-05-2005 07:12 PM

ok to get a credit card:

go over to neighbors house
hold a knife up to neighbors neck
force them to give both credit card and pin number to you
tie them up
take food from fridge
go to bank, extract money
and presto, credit card.

descry 03-05-2005 08:35 PM

credit cards dont have pin # ..... your thinking of debit cards.
