cable internet problems

I have roadrunner cable, they gave me a disk for my old computer, now I'm having trouble with it. I loaded it up and worked great, then it said it found some updates for the cable software, after i updated it stopped working.

the cd with the software for the cable says that its "for windows 98se,2000,and ME. I was wondering since I have xp now if I should get them to send me a xp disk.

also when I'm playing BIA is runs alittle choppy, I was wondering how to turn off programs on desktop while I am playing a game.

roadrunner box = hardware
cd = software, translates infomation from cable box to the computer....making a nice happy family?

That's typically what network cards do.

I've had cable for 6 years and have never needed any software for it.

how do i hook just a network up

MotoxXx 07-07-2005 09:32 PM

I loaded up Comcast for someone before and had to use a CD. But that is probably because I had to connect it by USB instead of ethernet, since a ethernet card wasn't installed.

dr nein 07-07-2005 09:32 PM

What do you mean? Take the ethernet cable on the modem and plug it into your ethernet card. Unless of course you have some sort of shitty USB hookup. If that's the case then I suggest suicide.

newt. 07-07-2005 09:33 PM

whats a ethernet cable look like?

MotoxXx 07-07-2005 09:34 PM

Basically looks like a wider plug than for a telephone.

i got one of those, i just plug it in?

MotoxXx 07-07-2005 09:41 PM

Yea, should have a place for it in the back of the modem and then connect it to your computer. It should work then since I believe only USB requires the software off a cd. If you dont have a plug for it on the computer you can buy a pretty cheap Ethernet card at Best Buy and install it into a PCI slot.

Edit: Wal-Mart carries them also. You can find the cards at just about any electronics store.

i have a slot, i can't find the cable now

MotoxXx 07-07-2005 09:45 PM

Those are pretty cheap to (depending on length) if you can't find yours.

newt. 07-07-2005 09:46 PM

yea tommorrow I'll find it, thanks moto

Nyck 07-07-2005 09:47 PM

their like 5-8 bucks

Bucknub 07-07-2005 09:51 PM

go to "run" type in "netsh dump" hit enter, that will reset all your network settings.

dunno why you're having problems with cable, for me, as long as there is a connection, all I have to do is plug it into my PC and im online in seconds.

newt. 07-07-2005 10:47 PM

yea i prolly could do that too, now atleast. I was just doing it the way i did it on my old computer.

I have so much stuff running...how do i turn it off? like spyware sweeper, norton antivirus x10, etc

MotoxXx 07-08-2005 12:34 AM

Ctrl+Alt+Delete and just shut down some processes.

If you want to prevent the programs from starting up everytime you reboot:
-Start
-Run
-type: msconfig
-click startup tab
-uncheck whatever you dont want to start during startup.
-click ok and then choose whether or not to restart.

You may want to go ahead and run a couple spyware-removal programs, a anti-virus scan, and maybe defragment if you haven't done so in a while.
