NCAA Football 2006

Any of you guys play this game for PS2 or Xbox yet? Im thinking about getting it, just wanted to hear some opinions from you guys.

Coleman 07-30-2005 12:22 PM

I am playing it as we speak as a matter of fact, and I like it, but I do have some gripes with it:

1) The long bomb passes are ridiculous, both for human and CPU. 90% of the time if the CPU throws a bomb into triple coverage, the receiver will miraculously jump 15 feet in the air and catch it, while your defenders will make half-assed attempts to bat the ball down. The short passing game for the CPU is retardedly hard as well, as the CPU finds ways to slide that ball between a tight middle zone coverage, a pass that should be picked off in real life 80% of the time. They also find ways to complete slow forming flat passes, another type of pass that should be picked off or at least batted down fast 90% of the time.

2) Offensive pass blocking: your offensive linemen have the skills of a 10 year old. Note I am playing a Race for the Heisman with SMU, so the players are not very good, but neither are the players I am playing against. Many times in a pass the DT will stunt, and theoffensive guard and tackle will just stand there bewildered that the defense would pull such a sneaky tactic, allowing the guy to come through untouched. I always keep my eyes focused on the line for the first few seconds of a pass play, I started doing that last year after getting sacked a lot, and 60% of the time I have to high tail it out of there, usually with little success. Note that the CPU's pass blocking is superb, and it is next to impossible to get through them without calling a 4-3 blitz.

Now for improvements:

1) The CPU running game is much improved, unlike last year where you could pretty much bet the CPU would pass 80% of the time. play calling is unpredictable, and makes you think twice about calling the same defensive play over and over. The impact players feature is the main cause of the improved rushing game. Good RBs feel like they can dominate you for perhaps the first time ever in an NCAA game. I played against USC, and Reggie Bush ran for 187 yards and two TDs, and he actually made nice moves and break tackles.

2) A few cool additions to the animations. RBs can win or lose a tackle battle by tapping the X button. The stiff arm animation is better I think.

I'm playing the game with SN's sliders, which are supposedly the best, but my assessment is there is not going to be any realistic video football game unless you play 15 minute quarters with appropriate difficulty settings (ie you have to punt the ball for most offensive posessions)

For PS2 the save times and load times are terrible.

I became addicted to it easily and I usually am not a big fan of college games.

Nothing really new in ps2 games, its like loading or saving an old school amiga game, when its doing it you go take a dump, get a drink or whatever.

Oh yes, I know. But on this game, it takes slow to a new level.

rdeyes 07-30-2005 02:44 PM

i like the game , i play as ohio state and they have a kick ass defense and 2 really good wr .

the computer cant really run the ball that well , but they sure can pass.

the impact player feature is really cool , if you are playing against a team with a good impact player look the hell out. i tried the race for the heisman a few times, but i wasnt good enough to get a scholarship from any good teams , so i just started a regular dynasty.

Overall its just NCAA 2005 with a few new features , im really waiting til Aug 9 when madden 06 comes with a new passing system.

You can run a 10K marathon when you save a dynasty on this game and it will still be saving it.

As far as the graphics, they are a tad bit better and stranger in some aspects. One thing that looks funny is the numbers are really fat on some of the jerseys. Vince Young #10, Texas, for example, the 0 on his jersey takes up the entire right side on the back, it looks stupid.

The sky backgrounds look a little better.

College Gameday is in the game now, but only for a few seconds.

Personally, I would keep 2005 if you have it, RFTH is not cool enough to buy it, and in-season recruiting is not a big enough addition to the dynasty to buy it.

Madden 06, on the other hand, is adding a huge game mode called NFL Superstar, and it looks in depth. I'd wait for that one, unless you really love college football a lot more than NFL.

Pyro 07-30-2005 03:57 PM

NFL 2K series > all...too bad it is extinct now.

[DAS REICH] Blitz 07-30-2005 04:48 PM

I used to be good at NCAA, but this year for some reason, I can't win. For one, control scheme is a little irritating for me on PS2. I can't understand how one can use the "juke stick" well. The idea of using the R3 button is too much of hassle since it's practically impossible to use while sprinting (you can't hold X and use the R3 button without awkwardly using your fingers). Another problem I have is the deep pass problem where it's very easy to complete (though I have been able to defend it when the correct animation comes up). I rather be able to complete deep passes rather than have them batted down 95% of the time (Madden).

Also, the Hit Stick button, for some reason, lags. Sometimes I press it, and the guy doesn't respond until the opponent has already past him. I might not be using the button correctly, but i still expect the animation to come directly after I press the button.

Race for the Heisman is a let down. It's essentially limited version of Dynasty mode. If you have any kind of imagination, you could easily duplicated the RFTH expierence on NCAA 2005 Dynasty.

As for Madden 2006, I am not impressed at all with the new features. From what I understand, they've only added three things: Passing Cone, Truck Stick, and Superstar Mode. If Superstar mode is anything like RFTH, I will definately be angry (i'm still gonna buy it though, since sports games are all I play). Unless they've added on to the features from last year, added a Hall of Fame feature for Franchise, and put in the names on the Historic rosters, I would be impressed.

Anyways, this is the last time I will be playing any new EA Sports games on PS2, so I wasn't expecting much from them.

the passing system will take so getting used to on Madden 06 , but its gonna kick ass

Chronic Diarrhea 07-30-2005 05:43 PM

Yeah, it looks like it's going to be hard to use at first. I predict I'll be sacked a lot whilst trying to find an open receiver.

I found the offensive line to be quite the opposite. With WVU I usually have atleast three linemen with 5 pancakes blocks or more. It seems to impove alot from last year. But thats my opinion.

Milla 07-30-2005 09:53 PM

Im doing a Run for the Heisman right now with Virginia Tech, awesome game, load times suck but usually loading the menus are quick. What pisses me off is the fucking AI's passing, they always hit their man. Its annoying.

Same though, my offensevie line is steller.

Chronic Diarrhea 07-30-2005 10:19 PM

Well remember I'm SMU, so that's probably why, it just seems really stupid at times.

I just had my #1 greatest game of all time. SMU vs. Tulsa oOo: happy:

It was a rainy night, and the two teams were going back and forth. Tulsa scores on their opening drive, and I do the same. Tulsa kicks a FG to make it 10-7. I kick a FG to tie it up at halftime 10-10.

Tulsa comes out in the 3rd ripping a huge asshole in my defense. No matter what play I called, they fucked me over with their west coast shit. TD. 17-10, no big deal, right? Next posession my Race for the Heisman guy fumbles the fucking ball. Two plays later Tulsa launches one. 24-10 end of 3rd. Fuck.

I come out in the 4th with some running. 20 yards here and there. TD. 24-17. Tulsa punts, I'm in good shape. Next posession the fucks blitz me like a bitch and my OL does jack shit, fumble, their ball. Next play TD. 31-17 with 2-something left. Next posession three plays 68 yard TD pass. 31-24. Tulsa throws a little pass out to the flats, and my impact CB strips the ball from that little bitch. I mix up the running and passing to get a 2 yd TD with 40 seconds left.

Tulsa fucks my shit over and throws a bomb, of course it's complete, my fucking CB was still jacking off at the line of scrimmage. They're on the 18 yard line with 20 seconds left. Sack. Timeout. Next play sack. Timeout, 4 seconds left. 4th and 28 they throw another fucking bomb, and my two fuckheads are having a circle jerk with each other, don't even bother to defend him. TD with no time left. XP is good, 31-31 we're going into OT.

I win the toss and elect to defend first. I shut those fags down. They pass on 3rd and 7, but only get 6 yards. They kick the field goal and it's good. 34-31. My posession first play I take my heisman guy and run it down to the 5 yard line. Next play 2 yards. Next play I stroll into the end zone. 37-34. Game over.

Chronic Diarrhea 07-30-2005 11:43 PM

I played UTEP, and their first play of the game Lee Corso says, "Their offense has really dominated this game." GG Corso. I won 73-10, three INTs returned for TDs.

Also SMU just recruited a 330 lb tackle named Michael Jackson.

Thats one thing I dont understand. They hardly ever add anything new to the voice acting or anything. Its the same shit every year it really makes me mad I even turned it off after playing the new one it got so familiar.

Cpt. Obvious 07-30-2005 11:48 PM

USF was beating be 28-7 in the second quartar. So I restarted the game and now I just won 73-6. My qb had eight touchdown passes.

Did you ever blow somebody out halfway through a game in a neutral field (ie SEC Championship, Big XII Championship, etc..) Brad Nessler would say, "And the crowd has quieted down," "The crowd has gotten quiet but I don't blame them," "This crowd's not as loud as they once were" every single play. I had to turn the sound off completely it pissed me off so bad.

Which is why I turned off all of that because they would do the same thing through out the whole game. Just annoying, I wish they would expanded the thing but Nooooo.

Ape 07-31-2005 12:26 AM

i think the o-line has improved alot, but they really dont function like real o-linemen, wheres the cutblocks? wheres the real pass pro and run blocking?

i have the game on xbox and the load times are fast, and race for the heisman is pretty lacking in my book, but overall NCAA is a damn good game on the xbox.

ive always sucked at madden and its not as fun for some reason, im not planning on getting it.

Ive always enjoyed NCAA more than Madden for some reason. Madden seems to lack in my book. No loud stadiums I mean come on they expect the stadiums to remain the same volume through out the game? Last year you couldnt even run the ball barely but hell you could bomb the ball. I mean Carolina is my team, and yet I could get Hail Mary's with Jake Delhomme even though he isnt even a long ball QB. Seems to me they are just there for the big names and the big plays.

Chronic Diarrhea 07-31-2005 12:38 AM

I don't know, I dominated the game with my rushing in Madden 2005. We would have dorm hall tournaments, and I would always win with rushing.

Even when the rules were to pick bad teams, I could win with a decent RB. For example, Washington + Clinton Portis = winnar. San Diego + Ladainian Tomlinson = unstoppable. As long as you know when and where to use your spins, jukes, stiff arms, sprint, and the triangle button to plow over a defender, 250 yards+ per game and 3 TDs is not out of the question. I could do this against the computer as well.

Milla 07-31-2005 02:30 AM

I wish in NCAA they had names on the back of jerseys. Not just nubmers and positions.

I just won VT vs Maryland Terps 73-14

[DAS REICH] Blitz 07-31-2005 07:07 AM

I noticed in NCAA that it is practically impossible to stop the AI on All American passing (and I guess it's even harder on Heisman). Though my secondary is rated a C-, i have the number defense in the NCAA through simulation, but whenever I face a good QB, the opposing team goes 11-14 with 200+ yards and 2 touchdowns. It's even worse when they are able to complete the short yard passes which are impossible to complete for the user (especially when your players drop the passes). The deep passes have become ridiculous; I was losing 31-14 in the 3rd quarter to USC, and knowing well I would lose, I decided to Hail Mary it for the rest of the game. I ended up winning 48-42.

what level are you guys playing ?

where can i find some good sliders to makes some games on heisman level a lil even so i dont get my ass kicked so often.

Iowa's QB is Drew Tate.

I use SN's sliders 2.5 as well, I think they're probably the best, I beat some team 38-0, then had another close game, and then I had a really great game against VT in the Fort Worth Bowl. I won 24-21 come from behind win.

do you get any rushing yards with these sliders? for some reason, my 88 ovr RB could only manage -27 rushing yards by the 3rd quarter (and my offensive line has 2 99's, a 96, a 84, and a 91). I had to change the CPU's D. Awareness to 55 in order to fix it, but i still had only 65 rushing yards (100 yards less then w/o the sliders).

Chronic Diarrhea 07-31-2005 05:37 PM

That's weird, I love the running game, I always have since I first played John Madden Football back in 1991-1992. I average about 230 per game, and that's with my dude who's a 90 OVR and a shitty shitty OL. What I do to get yards is run out of the I Twins, HB Iso. Switch the play back and forth. I set the slot guy in motion, usually this brings the OLB to the other side, leaving only the CB and the DE to deal with. Once the snap takes place I scan the inside lanes, if that's open I take it. If not, I make it look like I'm running inside anyway and then push the D pad either left or right (which ever way goes to the outside) and spin at the same time. If your HB is skilled enough, he will spin fast, stunning the LBs. This gives you an opportunity to hit the sprint towards the sidelines. 8-10 yards guaranteed.

Once I run this I'll either run Shotgun Spread Quick Option left or right, and either take it or pitch it, 5-10 yards. Then I'll go back to I Twins Counter and that usually picks up 5-8 yards, depending on how good the DE and DTs are, and whether or not they are blitzing. If they are blitzing, I get stuffed, but oh well. Once I am successful with this I run I Twins PA whatever to choke the defense, because they'll bite on it for sure, this picks up about 10-15 yards. Sometimes I get feisty and run Shotgun Spread Slants or post or something that usually gets one receiver open.

These sliders can be pretty hard sometimes, especially against good teams who have a talented DL. In that case they usually won't bite on me bringing the slot guy in motion, and I'll have to pick my plays very carefully in order to gain 3-4 yards per carry or not do something stupid like throw an INT or fumble the ball.
