Freedom!

This is it, real freedom. I turned in my resignation yesterday and have freed myself from the most unrewarding, boring and utterly life draining job I have ever had. I had to cover my mouth and let out some fake coughs to keep myself from laughing at my manager as I laid out the story.

Ive had this job for almost a year, and it was just one of those jobs where the money was just too easy to earn considering what your work actually consisted of. I just entered personal information into our student database......thats it. all day long, a sea of never ending lists of names, addresses and phone numbers gets keyed into the system. It was simple enough to not have any interaction with anyone and allow me to wear my headphones and just space out for 8 hours. That was really the only incentive other than getting paid $13 an hour.

My vacation was what made up my mind. I slowly phased out of college after i got my AA. My gf broke up with me, my dad had a series of never ending health problems and then my mom finally had to quit her job to take care of him. I had to put school off so that I could work more hours and help support my family. Last year i went with my ex friend to new york. this year we went to vancouver. it was really the best time i have ever had in my life. I have never taken a real vacation since i got out of the navy, so the last few years were nothing but work, women problems and wasting my years. i dont know what it was, but this last trip brought out the better part of me that wanted to better myself. my 'friend' goes traveling nearly 3 or 4 times a year whether its NY, Europe, San Francisco...you name it. Thats the life I should have been having this whole time, so when i got back last wednesday to my fuckin cube, i almost snapped. you could hear me typing all the way down the hall cause i kept smashing in those keys.

well ive decided that since my car is paid off and my visa is just about almost paid off, its time for me to gtfo and finish my shit.. i spent the weekend searching classes and this week, i registered for Cal State Fullerton for next spring and the local junior college to take some CIS classes ive always been interested in this fall. I have about 40 more units for graduation and this friday will be my last day (only gave them a few days notice) cause monday i start my programming courses. anyways, im really excited about this and i just thought i would share.

Im not too much of an attention whore so i wanted to ask if anyone here has any interesting job quitting/termination stories to tell?

damn it feels good to be a gangsta.

KTOG 08-17-2005 11:18 PM

Hah, ironic you say this because my job is exactly the same as yours (other than you make $5 more an hour than me) and my last day is tomorrow. Going to cananda on friday then school starts the following week.

The only semi-interesting termination i had was when i worked at Circuit City as seasonal help. I basically outsold everyone in the store but since i was a seasonal worker, i never got any rewards or such. All the other employees didn't like me much because i dominated their sales. I said fuck em and eventually i was laid off because Christmas was over.

Now fuck your bosses wife.

... and KTOG, what does it mean to dominate other workers in sales? You are just better looking and know more so the customers want you? eek:

Bleuachdu 08-17-2005 11:28 PM

Good for you dude. Bust your ass in school, but be sure to have some fun too. I really want to walk into my bosses office and shit on his desk, but I can't afford to do that right at the moment, so I'll keep grinding away for a few more months. I'll be finished with my BBA after this semester, and I'll have 3 years of professional IT mgt experience under my belt. At that point, I'll either go to grad school or work on some other business projects I've been a part of for a while. Either way, I can't wait for a change. Good to hear you did something about it and got out of the cube.

FREEDOM!

Hope all goes well for you. A fresh start is just what we need sometimes.

Tripper 08-17-2005 11:42 PM

Good 2 hear mate. Hope you have a good time with it.....I'm having a fucking blast on my course....

Madmartagen 08-17-2005 11:47 PM

yeah i need a fresh start, its been a hell of a month. i lost my friend, now im dumping my job. studying shouldnt be a problem because i wont have women or work on my mind, just studying and the occasional molesting of freshmen women in the library. im gonna look for a place to get a student loan just in case. anyone have any good suggestions? i applied for the FAFSA but i always get turned down for aide. i should have taken a loan out years ago.

Bean 2 08-17-2005 11:47 PM

why is friend in quotes? You dont like him?

Unknown_Sniper 08-18-2005 12:08 AM

there is the pell grant and some other government aids you can get. other than that Im using the fafsa.
GJ on getting out. Life is not worth wasting for any amount of money.

Madmartagen 08-18-2005 01:23 AM

Exactly ... and i outsold them by about $500 more of sales per hour.

Arkan 08-18-2005 06:31 AM

Good story, i like the way you spun things around. Sometimes in life you need a lil' kick in the ass to get going. Screw that deadend job and screw that "friend" of yours. Perhaps she's what you needed to get motivated.

Worst job i had was back when i was a teen. Worked for some plumber. I couldn't stand that dirty lil' fucker. His van and tools were all shitty and thrown everywhere. After about 3 days with him, i cursed him for having such a mess in the van.....couldn't find shit so i told him when we have a slow day, i'm gonna straighten things so i can find things when i needed them. Anyway, that only lasted about a year before i told him to fuck off with his dirty life habits. Fucker used to eat a sandwich with dirty hands and chewed with his mouth open. I never ate lunch with him past the 1st week.

I dropped out of college last year because it was emotionally draining for me. I went on to get the basic computer cets (A+ and Network+) and was only able to find a 10 dollar an hour job dealing with rude asshole new yorkers. I now realise the dropping out of college was a big mistake so im going back this comping september. I only hope to god i have the will to stick through it and get a Bachelors. annoy:

Pyro 08-18-2005 11:43 AM

Well Ive been at the same job for 3 years and have no reason to quit until I get a job in my field after univeristy because I get the hours I want and I like the people i work with, especially the chicks. Also since I got two new bosses instead of my first two ive been happier because the other two were bitches and the new ones are pretty cool.

KTOG 08-18-2005 11:47 AM

I would never work a job just because it pays well during college. I bit the bullet and took this shitty $8 an hour job this summer because it is an office job that is almost in my field. When i go into an interview and they see it on a resume i'll be look at first instead of someone who has been a lifeguard for 3 years.

Im moreso relying on my no criminal record than the fact im loyal to the jobs I take. Around here anyways a criminal record can fuck you over even if you're the best they have ever seen.

the only way id switch jobs is if I can find one in the field im in.

KTOG 08-18-2005 01:20 PM

I don't have a criminal record either eek:

omg so today was the last day and about 10 min before i walk out the door, my manager comes up to me and tells me how ironic it is that they fix our slow, shitty outdated system on my last day. i jokingly say that 'hah, ill come on on weekends then, how about that?' well she got all excited and says 'omg omg omg you can do that, you can come in on weekends if you want!!!111' i was kinda surprised because this place isnt a mcdonalds, they dont have a variety of different shifts available. i ask her if shes serious and she says 'you can work sat and sun if you want, we have work on the weekends that i need done cause that shit is always here monday morning.' well fuck, that would mean that i would be part time, working between 16-20 hours a week if she trhew in a 4 hour shift on friday and she did! she says that she will give me a half day on friday and i can come in on sat and sun and work 8 each. i have a 2.5 day work week and i still have my benefits and the same pay rate of $13 an hour. dude that shit rocks my cock, i can come in on sat and sun where there wont be anyone to bug me, i can wear shorts, listen to the radio, watch tv, fuckin look online, jack my cock and not have to worry about anyone talking to me. my managers office is right behind me, if i stare at my monitor i can see her facial reflection looking at me, its fuckin scary. this new shift means i can come in by myself with no traffic, i can take the freeway, and all i have to do is type shit all day long, plus i have the whole week to worry about school. if i want i can just come in on the weekends and do homework.

so looks like im working part time now, discuss plz. kinda sad that some people are suckin dicks to get a job whereas i cant even quit mine.

Jin-Roh 08-20-2005 12:38 AM

your manager wants to fuck you

TGB! 08-20-2005 10:56 PM

A bachelors wont mean shit in a few years. So for all of you thinking of "taking time off" before continuing with your Masters - dont. 25 yr olds with Masters are the new wave of the future.

Dont fuck yourselves over. Get the BA. Get a job. And start your grad studies.

No - it just sounds like your job is incredibly hard to fill and theres a backlog of work that needs to be updated.

And everyone hates their job - because thats all it is. . .a "job" - not what you want to be doing. I work 40 hours a week and go to school - it sucks but its gotta be done. That's what being an adult is about - especially a Mili Man.

ninty 08-20-2005 11:06 PM

Thats awesome Mad. As long as your happy with what you got there, that's all that should matter! Cheers!

eeves 08-20-2005 11:31 PM

so dude what happened to your fake friends stuff?

agh, she still hasnt picked it up. i havent talked to her either. its not really taking up space, but its retarded that she thinks she can take advantage even after we arent friends. im either gonna mail her passport back to her and leave her other shit out on the lawn or just charge her extra whenever she comes around to pick it up.

i am going to get my masters, its been a while, but im looking into the requirements for the teaching credential program at CSUF and the req to apply for grad school. i always wanted to get my PhD, but i dont know if im up for that kind of commitment.
