New Camera suggestions.

Thinking about getting a new digital camera. going for the 500 - 700 dollar range. I would like simple point and shoot, with a really high megapixel.

found this one at Wolf Camera.
[url:5473f]http://www.wolfcamera.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10101&catalogId=10001&langI d=-1&productId=13324308&bct=t1003%3Bc1009[/url:5473f]

anyone else have some good suggestions.

if you just want a point and shoot camera, why do you care if it's 5+? If you're not going to blow it up for a large picture, then 5mp will be more than enough.

Judas 11-09-2005 02:48 PM

700 range you might be able to get a dig slr ( not sure ) , i would totally get instead of point and shoot if you could find one in that range.

anti would be the best person to talk to i think.

I have a Canon A95 5 megapixel camera. I really like it. I think it was $450 CDN or something.

Good shizzz right there.

jujumantb 11-09-2005 02:51 PM

high megapixel count with a crappy lense will just give you crappy high-res photos. Lense is VERY important

My bro got a camera for something about that price. I think this was it http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/contro ... elid=11154 Although that looks slighly different.

Akuma 11-09-2005 04:31 PM

Canon G6 is probably the best point and shoot you can get... 7.1mp

But at that much I would go dslr. You could get a Nikon D50 for the same price.

Forte 11-09-2005 04:59 PM

hmmm I may look into DSLr's then.

What he said. I would get the Canon G6, but if you're looking for something ultra compact than go with that Nikon Coolpix. Both are great cameras, it's just a matter of preference. If you want to get into photography I would suggest the d50. You can still throw it on automatic and let it do the work for you, but it also provides everything you need if you wanted to get into manual photography.

yeah I found a D50 + lens for 699. but its only 28mm lens. I may just buy the body and get 2 lenses instead.

anti 11-09-2005 05:10 PM

that might rack up the bill a bit. most high quality lenses are fairly expensive. when i bought my d70 body i was thinking of doing the same - but i thought it would be more beneficial to just get one higher quality lens that will work for basic shooting (25-70).

Forte 11-09-2005 05:20 PM

I wonder if the lenses I currently have will fit it... how can I check? I have a macro lense and a regular one for shotting med - long shots.

anti 11-09-2005 05:39 PM

If they aren't Nikon lenses, they won't fit. I'm not even sure if Nikon SLR lenses fit Nikon DSLR cameras.

I could always go to the store and see for myself.

As far as compatibility from 35mm to a specific DSLR, in most cases you won't have a problem. However, a standard lens behaves differently on a DSLR since the DSLR's ccd is much smaller than the size of 35mm film. To put it simply you will get the equivalent of about 1.5 times the magnification using a standard lens on a DSLR. This may or may not excite you depending on what you plan on photographing. For example, the increased magnification comes at the expense of the breadth of the zoom. You won't get the same wide angle shots on a DSLR with you macro lens as you did before. I guess it just depends on what you want.

Same standard lens used on a 35mm and DSLR respectively.

Yeah they do. Every Nikon lense from around 1950 and up will fit on any of their DSLRs. But you lose metering and potentially auto focus.

and the whole 1.6x magnification thing...

Without metering, how would automatic exposure settings work? It would be worth it just to buy a digital lens. You're sacrificing more than it's worth if using older lenses.

Akuma 11-09-2005 06:42 PM

I never said it would be wise to do it, but it is possible to use your old glass.

PS: I REALLY want that new 18-200mm AF- S VRII lense... *drool*

I'm also thinking of selling my D70s to a friend and getting the new D200 when it comes out. Lot's of new features and a great price, but the thing I like the most is the weather proofing!

anti 11-09-2005 07:05 PM

i meant it as a general statement, not directed towards you. I was thinking of doing the same to get the d200, but i'm happy with my d70. I don't need anything more. When xmas rolls around im getting a 70-300 in the ED series, and then a Hoya r72 Infrared filter happy: .

Forte 11-09-2005 07:29 PM

I prefer Nikon over Canon

Akuma 11-09-2005 07:31 PM

Why would someone like you possibly need a $8000 professional camera...

Forte: I would sell it to but I'm not sure when I'll have $1000 laying around to buy the D200.

Awesome, congrats. rock:

What are you going to be taking pictures of?

TGB! 11-13-2005 08:46 PM

As others have said - if your talents are Point And Shoot - what the fuck do you need a 600-700 dollar camera for?

Forte 11-13-2005 08:53 PM

[quote="TGB!":e9dab]As others have said - if your talents are Point And Shoot - what the fuck do you need a 600-700 dollar camera for?[/quote:e9dab]

my talents go beyond point and shoot. ive been using a camera since I was 5. Ive been using my mom's Nikon on and off. Last time I bought a camera it was about 600-700 bucks. So in the same state of mind I thought thats what point and shoots were still in. Now I see that I can get a good DSLR for that price range.

@ Akuma: I plan on doing shots for art, vacation stuff, and most important mapping. Need some really nice quality shots for textures and references.

Akuma 11-13-2005 08:58 PM

Then what do you need macro lenses for? Those are for extremely close up pics.

edit: Just get a decent wide angle (kit lens works) and another with a decent zoom (200mm)

Nyck 11-13-2005 09:17 PM

rofl @teenagers getting 700 dollar cameras

On the side I like to take shots of surfaces. Ever looked at your fingerprint. I mean really looked at it. Some of the smallest stuff is the coolest.

You've seen the wife, no? What would YOU rather being doing. . .

annoy:

Still though - could get a used camera and save scratch. Unless you're one of those "Money is no object - lovey gets what she wants" famalies. . .

Heh, I thought you were thinking of using it for lanscapes or whatever you said you were going to do with it.

I have weird ideas on what "art" is.
