I think my ipod...

...has shit the bed.

It doesn't get past the Apple image that comes up when it first boots and is making a strange squeeky noise. Sounds like the drive might not be spinning properly.

So, I've had it for 13 months. Its probably out of warranty now, right? If so, can it be repaired? If not by Apple, then maybe by a 3rd party? Any recommendations or previous broken iPod experiences are appreciated.

This sucks

getting stuck at the apple screen seems normal. happens to me every now and then, i just format it and it works.

the squeaking noise can't be good annoy:

all the ipods except the nano are all hard drives. where have you been? you're the computer guru

Miscguy 12-28-2005 07:11 PM

Only the nanos are flash, All other ipods are HDD based.

Edit, fuck you himmler.

Milla 12-28-2005 07:12 PM

Mine sometimes when i turn it on to play music nothing happens, it just sits there on a song but doesnt play anything. I just hold the menu button and the middle button to reboot and it works fine.

there was a recent thread about iPods and their tendency to break, if I recall correctly, there were some people who got very angry at me for saying that iPods break a lot...

Coleman 12-29-2005 12:19 AM

ipods suck, you cant transfer music onto them without the spyware (oops software). Other MP3 players apear as another drive so you can just copy/paste music into them. Go with the off brand MP3s tell ipod to GTH

Anyway, I'm pretty sure its cooked. I plugged it into the wall overnight (fixes many ipod problems) and it still won't boot up. The breakage is my fault; I dropped it the other day when the case was off, so I don't have room to complain at Apple or whine about it breaking.

I'm going to look into getting it fixed in the next few days. If it's impossible, I'll be buying something new. I'd look into products other than Apple. Here are my requirements:

Compatible w/ iTunes
30GB +
Some sort of Car dock available

Other than that, I don't need much. Any suggestions?

my ipod and my families and girlfriend's ipods are all still going strong.

then again my psp blows away all zens and ipods.

Milla 12-29-2005 10:38 AM

No suggestions, if you dropped it that sucks man. cry:

Yea - Ipod video 30gig. Or just get a 3rd Gen 30gig for like 100 bucks off secondary market. Or just take it into the apple store - tell them it JUST started making them noises. Theyll ask you gay ass questions about what you did to it to try to get you to say you fucked it up - stand true, and youll be fine. Worst comes to worst theyll swap it and you can pay diff - or just toss it on ebay.

What software - theres tons out there to get music on to the ipod.

I bought my daughter a 40 gig iPod for Christmas last year. She is now on her third one. On the first two the HD crapped out after just a few months. But at least they stood behind their product. I mailed both of them back and they sent us a new one ... we got the one she has now only a couple of weeks ago. They extended the warranty for 90 days to cover it.

I won't buy another one.

dont smoke anymore. I have put MP3s on a Rio MP3 player and all you do is plug it in the the USB port and just copy/paste any MP3s into it. No software no problems. The player shows as my 3rd drive. I tried to put some MP3s onto my brothers Ipod and it was a hassle, it wont allow me to add files without Apples spyware

Forte 12-29-2005 11:56 AM

ummm how is iTunes spyware?

Wondering if the nano would be better with flash memory as opposed to a hdd ipod. I still haven't gotten one but now i may be leaning towards a nano instead. What do you fellas think?

geRV 12-29-2005 12:37 PM

Think both the nano and the shuffle have flash ram, if the shuffle has got a hard drive its gotta be fucking tiny. oOo:

Might be better with the flash ram version, would survive being dropped a lot more readily than a regular ipod with a hard drive and all its moving parts would.

quite frankly, the nano is so damn small that your prone to drop it way more than the regular ipod, I looked at one at one of those apple stores and it was too tiny.

That caused me some big problems when I first installed it. I have two internal drives and one USB hard drive that I use to back stuff up. The dang iPod stole the drive letter of the USB drive! It caused a mess that took me several days to fix.

Sgt>Stackem 12-30-2005 06:00 AM

maybe I was worrying for nothing but since this whole Sony thing came about I have less trust in any companies software. iPod has a huge intrest in Itunes so that in itself is enough to leave me skeptical

Are you oOo:'ing Stackem's distrust of Sony? I don't trust them anymore either. In fact, I bought several gifts this Christmas where I was first reaching for the Sony product and then changed to something else due to Sony's recent admission of putting spyware on their music CD's.

c312 12-30-2005 11:22 AM

Did they actual put it there? I read the stuff on the CDs just made holes for spyware to get to your computer easier.
