My First Job...

I got interviewed today for a level design position for a local company. It doesnt pay well ($25 per map), but I could care less. I will be mapping for the game Dark Summer. http://www.absynthinteractive.com/darks ... /main7.htm It is a very unique project that I am very proud to be working on. Kind of odd for a first job considering I will be doing what I want to be doing for the rest of my life. The graphics, and pay suck but what do you expect from your first job.

To make this thread worth while, what was your first job, and how old were you when you had it?

c312 02-03-2006 07:28 PM

I worked as a Camp Counseler at a camp for disabled kids.

02-03-2006 07:29 PM

I worked construction, mainly painting and putting up drywall.

Unknown_Sniper 02-03-2006 07:30 PM

how long does it take ot make a map? do the math and if you are working for less than minimum wage leave the job.
My first job was as a dishwasher. I was 14 or 15(highschool freshman) and I held that job for nearly two years. And right now I wish I had a job so bad I would yet again wash dishes.

Miscguy 02-03-2006 07:30 PM

I sold tools on commision for sears at 16.

I am not leaving this job. I am doing it for experience in the industry. Over the short run, it is crap. But later on in life when I am being interviewed for a larger developer, previous experience in the industry is what will set me out from the others.

Jakke 02-03-2006 08:09 PM

i got fired at the PC store and i got hired at our local supermarket

butch 02-03-2006 08:44 PM

I bailed hey on a farm for 2 summers. 40 hours a week, 1.00 per hour. Saved my money and bought my first car. Now my son and I own a construction company but ill never forget that first job. Kicked my ass and made me feel great at the same time.

Tripper 02-03-2006 09:37 PM

Worked the same afterhours shift at Videon (Video Store) for like a year....11pm til 5am...That job was great, except I had to work Friday-Sat....

Scorched Earth 02-03-2006 09:39 PM

I work at a jewelery store now as my first job. I mostly do cleaning and run errands but i do sell jewelery and get massive discounts ( for presents, not a big fan of the earrings myself, or of $5000 watches either)...pretty nice first job.....the other day, i sent out a package of a watch that was purchased for $75,000. It boggles who can have that much money to waste on something so small. It was all silver, or white gold, or platinum, and was fully encrusted in diamonds (every centimeter) even on the inside of the band and under the glass next to the watch mechanics..... stupid: oOo:

Scorched Earth 02-03-2006 09:40 PM

yea i have to work 9-6 every saturday. damn retail.

tomxtr 02-03-2006 09:41 PM

Don't let anyone whore you just because its your first job. If the company or their product is not well known, probably won't mean too much on a resume anyway. I'd think for that type of job a portfolio of some sort would be more meaningful.

Me...first job, delivering the Pacific Stars and Stripes after school when I was 12.

Madmartagen 02-03-2006 09:43 PM

did a bunch of oddities and traveling with the navy, worked in a warehouse for a year, worked at sony for a year, sold my soul for a data entry job for a school (about a year) and now im a telecom analyst/manager at an investment & loan company. im also a junior at CSUF

Johnj 02-03-2006 10:05 PM

I did yard work and had a paper route. My first real job was at Henry's Hamburgers. I made .85¢ per hour flipping burgers. Hamburgers were a dime and cheeseburgers were .15¢. On the 2nd Friday of the month hamburgers were 20 for a dollar. It was good money for a 15 year old kid in 1970.

I really dont care about the pay. If I stay on the project team and dont leave after I make a few maps (like most people do) I will get cut a larger percentage. The company itself doesnt have any income, as this is the first game they are going to put out. It has been 4 years in development, basically made in their spare time during their day jobs, and going to college.

Short Hand 02-04-2006 12:57 AM

Then this is not a job. It is a "hobby with poor benefits". One of my professors does 3D modeling for medical purposes and pulls in 3000 $ for a weeks worth of work. THAT is a job.

(Medical related crap makes up 80 % + of the 3D industry by the way.. SOMETHING you may want to look into.)

yeah... like the commercials that talk about exciting careers in the game development industry rolleyes:
there are no jobs there, do it for fun, or $25 per map... dont think you will make a career out of it.

wintersforge 02-04-2006 01:01 AM

i cant remember my first job..... oOo:

Sgt>Stackem 02-04-2006 07:03 AM

i had a huge paper route at about 10 but my first job was at a pet store shoveling shit at 12 years old, $0.50 an hour!!!!! It wasnt that bad, I liked all the animals and got to play with them so that made the day better

Yeah, I have to agree. You'd be better off working on Blackwater Mods or some shit. At least their stuff doesn't look like utter shit.

A large % of 0 = 0. I don't think that a reference given by some dude in his dorm room is worth two shits. If you want to do it for fun, then do it. However, if you want job experience, then go intern at a real company.

Nyck 02-04-2006 08:48 AM

I would have to agree, call this a hobby, not a job . Lets say it takes you 25 hours of time to make one map...do the math

[quote="Napoleon Dynamite":c65d6] Thats like a DOLLAR an HOUR![/quote:c65d6]

which hardly qualifies as worth a damn

Proteus 02-04-2006 09:42 AM

Flooring company. It sucked.

elitecloud 02-05-2006 02:49 AM

Busser in a buffet, 6.50 / hr + 20-70 tips which wasn't taxed

then moved up to a server - 4.50 /hr + tips - 2k /mo depends on the nights

now a food server (liked you'd see at chilis or somthing) 4.25 / hr - tips kinda suck but it's a casino so

trying to get into security - 11/hr X 40/hr weeks = 80/hr checks = YESSSSSSS

car paid off in little under a year, i can dig it
