Thinking about getting a Jeep Wrangler

Does anyone here own a Wrangler or knows anyone who owns one?? What do you have to say good/bad about it??

Miscguy 04-17-2006 07:03 AM

Aside from lack luster proformance, you'll enjoy filling up every two days with its god aweful gas mileage. If your off roading its not bad, but as an everyday driver, there are far better options.

Zoner 04-17-2006 07:04 AM

Not to mention the doors rusting off their hinges... annoy:

In high school, I wanted a Wrangler SO bad...now I couldn't be bothered.

I bought this Wrangler Laredo in '89 and drove it until january of '06. It has 147,874 miles on it and I never had to replace anything major whatsoever.

It has a straight 6, 4.2 litre engine with a 5 speed manual transmission, which means maintaining is simple. (changing oil, belts, etc. is a breeze)

With 4wd in the snow the thing handles like a go-cart with amazing control.

I had it in Colorado for two years and used to take it offraoding all of the time up mountain passes on mining roads and in Michigan while hunting. Never had I been stuck in this thing.

The thing about this vehicle is that when you take the top off it is like driving a totally different vehicle, so I never got sick of it.

I still have it and plan to restore it to showroom condition so I can take it out again.

Actually, the only reason I got my Envoy was because of the lack of room for gear. You can remove the back seat for more storage in about two minutes and a roof rack helps out when moving things.

One word of advice, make sure you get a hardtop with it because road noise is a bitch with a softop. You also might want to get AC because driving around with the windows down blows. That was the only option I didn't get on mine and I'm pissed I didn't.

I still have it but miss driving it now that spring is here.

Here are a couple of pics of mine looking pretty pissed off that I got a new ride.

I bought my daughter a Wrangler last year. It was four years old when I bought it, with about 38,000 miles. She loves it. So far we have not had any problems with it at all.

But it is a Jeep, so it is noisy on the highway. The miles per gallon suck. Etc. But she wouldn't trade it for anything. Her's is a manual transmission, straight six, 60th Anniversary model.

Scorched Earth 04-17-2006 09:19 AM

i would definately love a wrangler...cept as others say..the gas mileage blows..and im pretty sure the safety of the thing is extremely bad.

Unknown_Sniper 04-17-2006 11:14 AM

Jeeps are actually faily safe vehicles. How many SUV's do you know of that come with a built in roll cage?
My Uncle has a Rubicon that he let me drive. 6cyl, 6spd, low gearing, larger tires, lockers front and rear, that thing is fucking nice.
IF you live where it gets cold get a hard top, if you live where it rarely gets below 60 get a soft top and never use it. As for gas milage, you have to realize its not an aerodynamic 4 cyl light weight car. This is a square heavy truck, with a larger engine. If you are worried about leg space, wait a year or so jeep is coming out with a 4 door version of the wrangler which looks hot.

Jeeps rock I want one!

Simo Häyhä 04-17-2006 12:39 PM

i really want one

I bought a Jeep wrangler in 98 new. Im still driving it everyday and have little or no problem with it. 6 cylinder automatic. I wouldnt trade it for anything else. As far as safety goes, My wife got hit by a small pickup truck that ran a stop sign. He was going around 50 mph and hit the left rear tire. It spun the jeep around 360 and only busted the tire and broke the rim. He never made contact with the body of the jeep. Wife was shaken up a bit but not hurt. The truck did not survive, It left the accident on a wreaker in pretty bad shape.

Its true gas milage sucks but its the price you pay for havin the jeep. If your lookin for gas milage get a piece of shit KIA. They get good milage but are made from recycled beer cans. Take a hit in that and you'll wish you had the wrangler.

At work we had a 15,000 lb forklift get off the driveway and get stuck in the sand. Two normal forklifts couldnt budge it. I hooked a chain on the front bumper and pulled that big son of a bitch back onto the hard road. Try that with a lesser vehicle.

Here it is 8 years later with 75,000 miles and still going strong:

The CJ 5's and 7's were, but the Wranglers are very stable believe it or not.

I had a '79 CJ 7 and almost rolled that in high school on a dirt road. Luckily the road had been graded and the built up dirt on the sides of the road saved my ass. I remember when I hit it, I was literally doing a wheel stand on the right rear tire and staring at the sky with the front end about 4 feet in the air.

Never have even come close in the Wrangler with my 17 years of driving that.

p.s. Milla, the USP shoots like a dream and I'm taking my CCW class the 28th and 29th,

I just spent 12 hours in the truck as we drove to Brantford Ontario to get a 1949 willy's jeep and tow it home. Was a good trip and a really really cool jeep. Needs some TLC but what do you expect when its older than me and my friends ages put together. It looks exactly like this, painted flat olive green with no top. Got lots of funny looks towing it down the 401.

thanks for the replies, really appreciate it. Right now I'm still on a desicion bind on whether I should throw down on a Wrangler or a 4Runner... Wranglers are nice, but the 4Runner has nice MPG

Miscguy 04-24-2006 01:44 AM

Just look at gas prices in the gas thread. Evaluate how much you must drive, and then consider if you want to spend that much for a vehicle.

I did that when i bought my car. I fill up about once a week with premium, at about $32 a pop. I drive to work and some recreation, about 280 miles a week. Not a cheap car to opperate at 23c / 27h, but i love it. I think its worth the cost. Hell if i wanted fuel efficency in a nice looking car id get a civic hybrid, i wanted small, fast, and nimble.

Godsmack 04-24-2006 10:53 PM

I got a CJ that I use for offroading

too much money went in to that for me to sell it n I still use it mostly every weekend. but the clutch is bad n it has no dash cuz im makin a new 1 because I had no where to put the gauges. the only thing stock on that is the fram n the body. bitch im ridin 33's

but yeah there fun for offroadin n if your an everyday driver dont get it
