Certifications

I just signed up for an online training course that'll allow me to become comptia certified within a year. I was just wondering if anyone else here is in the process of becoming certified (IT or other field ) or already is.

I need some IT certifications,

give me some places to get it online guys.

Simo Häyhä 05-12-2006 04:06 PM

you can study online but you'll need to take the tests in some certified test center. CompTIA usually has expensive tests (+200 dollars to take one) but the good thing is you're certified for life. Other tests such as ones by Cisco you have to re-certify every 3 years or so.

Milla 05-12-2006 04:13 PM

I want to get certified at my comm college but they dont offer all the damn classes anymore.

So im just taking a few networking classes. cry:

Bullitt 05-12-2006 04:21 PM

I signed up with http://www.cbtdirect.com. They have a wide range of IT programs available and are partned with tons of companies including dell and microsoft. The guy set me up with a $3500 (no interest) plan for a year. I figured i'd rather dish out that much $$$ for something needed instead of bs like clothes, games, accessories etc. It's a great deal if you ask me

m00nraker 05-12-2006 05:46 PM

Working on my CCNA right now. I have been taking the classes at my HS and i Completed CCNA 1 & 2. Going to take the test in a few weeks.

Senior year ill take CCNA 3 & 4, then test on those, and get my CCNA Certification

Judas 05-12-2006 05:51 PM

the certs are probably a nice addition to a degree id say ... most of the jobs ive seen require both.

05-12-2006 09:21 PM

I am in the works of having my A+ and N+, i have MCP in Windows XP.

of course they'd prefer that you have both but realistically, the qualifications for some of those jobs are just plain ridiculous! If you were to submit your resume (certifications w/o degree), im sure you'd get a callback from them for an interview. And say if you're in the process of receiving your degree or certificate for whatever it is they require you to have, that would also work. Just give it and try and have faith

05-12-2006 10:52 PM

what direction of IT do you want to get into? Any questions, feel free to PM me. I always love to help out a fellow tech head ;)

Simo Häyhä 05-12-2006 11:13 PM

ehhh get em if ya want. im sure they look good on on the resume, but probably wont do much to up your salary.!

MCP in Windows XP

i am working on MCSE on WinServer 2003, its 6 fucking tests.

COMPTIA are good for entry level stuff, you can get a job as a helpdesk tech or something like a geeksquad guy with an A+ certification.

Focus on COM101 first, as well as MTH101. A certification costs less than getting a bachelor's degree.

Pyro 05-14-2006 05:01 PM

I have to say...a lan party would be more enjoyable drunk...

ive done some telnet game prophecy during rainy lunches in middle school...and rogue spear when i went to some place.

but that was years ago...when I first ever stole this name from a guy who was whoopage in dark forces 2.

I took the CCNA years ago.
It raped me hard dude..real hard

ps- what kind of govt. clearance do you need for your job?
I was thinking of joining the national guard and wanted to try and qualify for MOS 98J ( http://www.us-army-info.com/pages/mos/i ... e/98j.html )
But i hear they're phasing that one out.

Milla 05-14-2006 06:00 PM

No idea man, i know the longest process to get a job with a defence contractor is the damn background check. Some people wait a year to hear back for a gov't job.

I want to get cisco certified, but thats the kind of shit i need to actually sit in a class for and have someone talk to me, icant do that online or ill get raped.

Simo Häyhä 05-14-2006 06:12 PM

I took cisco classes in high school
I also believe Coleman's brother took cisco classes in high school too. I remember we were both on IRC one night and i got into his shared C drive and looking at pictures of his brother pimpin' the ladies. Coleman take some tips from your bro.

ps milleh- i sent you a PM on myspace, joo havent responded!

Milla 05-14-2006 06:23 PM

Manages and maintains the database? Pretty much just server work. Making sure everything is up to date. A lot more work than you think from what my teacher tells me.

Miller, you should seek out a Microsoft certification instead. Government uses Microsoft Windows Server 2003, if you get a MCSE for that, you are already ahead of most candidates. Most database administrators have Microsoft certifications.

Don't get me wrong, Cisco certifications are great as well, but they are more for Network Administrators.

PS: If you want more of this information in detail, feel free to send me an IM. My AIM is paulius2003.
