100 yd touchdown on final play

I know most of you probably don't care, but this happened last night and i thought it was pretty cool. Maybe those of you more into sports can appreciate it.

Under a minute left Winnipeg fumbles the ball on 3rd down when they needed 1/2 a yard. If they got the 1/2 yard it would be 1st down and they could take a knee and the game would be over. (3 down football in CFL). Edmonton recovers fumble and scores to go up by 2 points with 15 seconds left. Final play of the game Winnipeg puts up the hail mary pass...

2 touchdowns in the final 15 seconds of the game.

Sgt>Stackem 07-21-2006 11:57 AM

yeha, dfence was completly stupid. thats bad coaching. i don't know what defensive coach was thinking rishing 5 on the last play of the game. all they needed to do was get the secondary to sit back and wait for the guy to catch the ball and take him out. game over. but thats the eskimos for ya. i love it when they lose.

gtboys34 07-21-2006 12:13 PM

yeah i saw it on cnn this morning. Im beggining to like to really like the cfl. Maybe it's because the NFL season hasn't begun yet..... yeah, thats it.

ps: i didnt know they had a canadian sportscenter

I updated the link. Found a better one:

http://www.cfl.ca/index.php?module=videofb&func=view

click on the top one. Winnipeg a@ Edmonton #28

and yeah, we have sportscentre because ESPN bought TSN.

Sgt>Stackem 07-21-2006 12:25 PM

two things strike me on that.

1 the 55 yard line (Ill never get over that)
2 a running track around the field? What is this high school?

Zoner 07-21-2006 12:27 PM

I dunno why you guys rag on the CFL so much. It's a slightly different brand of football, but that doesn't mean it sucks.

I'm not even a fan of football, but I know a decent sports product when I see it.

ninty 07-21-2006 12:33 PM

field is also 12 yards wider i believe.

thats commonwealth stadium. it hosted the commonwealth games so it needed the track for all that stuff. it's a 60,000 seat stadium.

it also held the largest hockey game ever in 2003.

And yeah, don't rag on it. Ricky Williams has a 4 yard avg and 1 TD, there are good players here and it's entertaining to watch for Canadians.

Sgt>Stackem 07-21-2006 12:38 PM

its just wierd to see a track at a football stadium. All NFL and most college stadiums (in the US) are solely dedicated to football. It reminds me of coaching my sons team at the middle school

ninty 07-21-2006 12:40 PM

I think Edmonton is the only stadium in the league with a track in it.

In BC, Calgary, Saskatchewan, Winnipeg, Hamilton and Montreal the stadiums are all dedicated to their CFL team except for when Montreal plays in the Olympic Stadium with more seats. Thats where the Expos used to play.

its just sooo different, what if you turned on the TV and saw the new AmericanNHL and it had 2 red lines? You would look at that and say "thats all f*cked up" The CFL may be a great sport, I dont know. If you enjoy it then have fun but it is too weird for me. NFL is classic and to see it messed with is disturbing

Zoner 07-21-2006 01:34 PM

The funny thing is, the CFL has been around a helluva long time, so if anything the CFL game is just as "classic". It has its beginnings around 1909 when Earl Grey donated the Grey Cup, but the CFL as we know it has been around since 1954, I believe.

I know what you're saying, I really do. I know that the NFL in the USA is a religion, an institution that is sacred on Sunday/Monday nights.

Don't dismiss a whole sport that millions of people enjoy just because it's a little different.

ninty 07-21-2006 01:39 PM

not sure if your saying that we messed with it or if it's jsut strange to see football played that way but cfl was around long before the nfl. football is derived from rugby. infact there used to be matches between canadian and american teams all the time. cfl teams used to play nfl teams in the 50's and 60's in exhibiton games when the schedules were the same. i think the last game was buffalo bills against hamilton tiger cats where hamilton won.

[quote:c11d0]Football was introduced to North America in Canada, by the British Army garrison in Montreal, which played a series of games with McGill University. In 1874, McGill invited Harvard to Montreal to play their new game derived from Rugby football in a home and home series. Many of the similarities and differences between the Canadian and American games indeed came out of this original home and home series where each home team set the rules. For instance, Harvard due to lack of campus space did not have a full-sized rugby pitch. Their pitch was only 100 yards long x 50 yards wide with undersized endzones (still the regulation size for American Football). Because of the reduced field, the Harvard team opted for 11 players per side, one less than the regulation 12 of Rugby. The number of downs was also increased by Harvard to 4 from 3 set by McGill to generate more offence. Both the Canadian and American games still have some things in common with the two varieties of rugby, especially rugby league, and, because of the similarities, the National Football League has established a formal relationship with the Canadian Football League.[/quote:c11d0]

Kind of interesting to see why things are they way they are. the NFL field is smaller because harvard had a smaller field. The canadian field is larger because we played on rugby fields.

and as zoner said, the grey cup has been around since '09. This year is the 94th grey cup in Winnipeg.

I also forgot to mention there were a number of American CFL teams in the 90's and Baltimore even won a grey cup against my stampeders.
