Kid transfered because of map

This article is getting picked up [url=http://news.google.com/news?ncl=1115957401:a200e]by a few papers[/url:a200e]. A high school senior made a counter-strike map that resembled his school and because of that and having a hammer (a weapon) in his bed room he is being force to transferred to an alternative education center and can't go to the graduation celebration.

While I can see why the school is concerned about a student making a map of the school for cs I don't think their reaction was the right one. I think that instead of sending the police to his house and sending him to a different school they should have sent him to a school/outside therapist to see if the kid is ok and react according to that. While I know most of us will side more with the student as we are all gamers what does every one else think about this?

so far the best article I have seen about it is http://blog.wired.com/games/2007/05/cou ... ike_m.html

I dunno, It would be pretty odd to make a map of your own school for a game where you shoot people....I think there is definitely a cause for CONCERN....They absolutely did handle it in the wrong way though. You dont go straight to DEFCON 5 in a situation like this...Just keep a closer eye on the kid. He shouldnt be punished. That would be ridiculous.

dr nein 05-02-2007 11:46 PM

I don't see how it's that odd. It's Counter-Terrorists vs Terrorists, not Aznkid13 vs Classof07

...But why would you make your school? Especially after people are coming down hard on gamers in the wake of these school shootings - Just seems odd to me that this kid didn't wonder to himself what people would think if they found he was making a school map for a game where the aim is to kill people.

...Thats why its odd.

His parents turned him in to the fuzz and school when they found the mod/map on his computer.

"This goes back to Columbine. Ever since that horrid incident took place schools today have to take every incident that is reported very seriously," Fort Bend ISD spokeswoman Mary Ann Simpson said. "And they have to impress upon students how serious this type of thing is. We can't joke about things or take things lightly anymore."

jujumantb 05-03-2007 12:53 AM

I dont think thats unreasonable at all. the hammer having anything to do with it is stupid, but making a map of your school for a fps game??? cmon lets not be stupid in this day and age. while 99% of the time, a kid like that wont be shooting up his school, thats the behavior to be looking out for imo... sorry it happened if he was just doing it for kicks... but dont be stupid rolleyes:

I think it's a pretty cool idea to make a map of a school or local area for CS. Had I played it when I was at school & had the knowledge to make a map I'd probably have tried to do it myself. Merely because of playing in a well known & personal location & it would have been a fun & exciting thing to do. If there were any maps of my local area/old school I'd love to play them now. Though it's also not necessarily CS, I tried flying over my area in Combat Flight Simulator & still got quite a buzz seeing my home town & also going to London & flying under Tower Bridge rock:

There's certainly some kids I would have privately loved to have blown away at my school as there were some real rich, arrogant, spoilt & conceited bastards. (It was a British private/public school & rather old fashioned, straw hats & the like). But I'd never actually go & do it kus I'm not that crazy... stupid:

I wonder how good the map was.. If it was blueprinted to a T I would worry, if it looked off he's obviously just trying to play CT in his school.

I think my school would be hella fun to play CT. And it's a huge building but you wouldn't get lost because you know the place. So if you had team games with other kids from school it would be sweet.

c312 05-03-2007 07:15 AM

i always thought it would be fun to paintball or have an airsoft war in a school.

And just for good measure, if you feel like expressing your opinion on this subject directly to school, check the following site for a link to the school board and etc.

Looks like a nice school.

Kicking the kid out for that is retarded.

Sgt. Paine 05-03-2007 10:37 AM

I mean i have always wanted to buy my school and turn it into a paintball place because it has very long hallways and rooms on both sides. its really big and awesome.

Stammer 05-03-2007 11:25 AM

I've made maps of my house and local places before, only because it's interesting to see places you've been to and that you know exist, in a game. The reaction the school took was completely disproportionate to the circumstances - and those parents are retarded. Yes, lets not discuss this with our son first but report it to the police and school.

oOo: oOo: oOo: oOo: oOo: oOo:

edit: I wonder what would have happened if he had made his school or a part of it in a game like The Sims.

Probably would have still kicked him out for trying to create an anarchic monopoly simulator.

Unknown_Sniper 05-03-2007 12:53 PM

I always wanted to do that for my school, place of work, and neighbor hood. Does that make me psychotic? no, it makes me a cheater because I would know all the sweet spots on the map.

Tripper 05-03-2007 03:28 PM

I think everybody should remember that if this kid did go ahead and perpertrate a school shooting and nobody had done anything at all about the map - They would be in serious shit. Just remember that.

I mean, sure it has been blown out or proportion, but a bunch of ignorant adults were just trying to cover their own asses.

dr nein 05-03-2007 04:44 PM

Actually going to the school would be a much better tactical training exercise than playing Counter-Strike unless maybe he pulled the lan cable so the other team just stood there and got shot. He'd know the schedules and even be able to pick and plan targets if needed.

It's a fucking game. I played several Supreme Commander games on a downsized map of the Earth in which I attacked North America. If I go join some Muslims and bomb the U.S. does that make it at all related?

Airborne Butters 05-03-2007 05:35 PM

I actually made a DoD map of my school, way back in the day. Me and a few freinds would play DoD and one day we got bored enough to make a map out of it. A few people and teachers knew about it, but no one ever said anything about it.

you know that its happened before? A school shooter has made a map of his school for a game.

Im not saying its right to investigate based on this, either - Im just saying its logical that as niave older people, theyre going to make that link.

My exact thoughts. Parents dropped the ball on that one and the school ran with it.

I also built a map of my house and a place i once worked. It's still a fucking game.

Simo Häyhä 05-03-2007 07:56 PM

awesome map. too bad school administrators are fucking retards.

Isn't Google having a contest with colleges to see who can build the best 3D model of their campus?
