Cable or DSL?
I would like a definitive answer to the question which is, "What makes for the best connection for online gaming with MOH?". I currently have cable (AT&T Broadband) and it 'usually' works fairly well, but not always. Many times I discover that I'm the one causing 'lag' and I have to disconnect and try again later, or slow the game down (that's unacceptable to me). Others who have DSL rave about it's performance. I tried DSL (Bell South), and while for the month that I tried it, it didn't cause any lag. It did over all seem to be a little bit slower, responsively speaking. I believe that DSL is much slower on the 'upload' than BroadBand, but I'm not sure exactly if that has any impact with onlone gaming. I'm not knowledgeable about such things.
I realize that ppl have strong feelings of loyalty to thier connection(s) for some reason, but what I'm looking for is an unbiased, informed and educated opinion (in lay terms of course). I have to make a descision here pretty soon and need some help in that process. Thanks in advance for the help. Steve Lowry (Exorcist) |
cable.

here are the facts:
Cable is shared on a line with other people, where DSL isn't. Because of that shared line with Cable, your connection might not always be top par. Most DSL lines run at 384k connection speeds, where Cable runs at either 512k or over 1MB connection speeds. Overall Cable is faster but not as reliable. DSL is slower but more reliable. Both have their pros/cons. I have DSL and i usually get about 110 ping on some of the crappier servers. Yet on that same server Cable users might be getting around 80. On the other side of the coin, if you are wanting to host a server, then Cable is your friend. Cable can host up to around 8 players while maintaining playability on the server. DSL is lucky if it can support 3 or 4, and thats pushing it. Now you can see why i dont host alot ;). Hope those bits of info help you out. |
Well not to blow smoke on your post but it really all depends on the where
you live. And whats available to you. I have been using DSL for almost 4 years now. I can tell you that it all depends on how much money you are willing to shell out for your connection. I had a 768/768 connection for 150.00 thru Speakeasy DSL. THey are one of the best Broadband servers out thier. But the amount of money was killing me. I could host in Tribes 10 to 12 players on a server. And that was alot considering the amount of packets. But now i have Cable and the down load is crazy fast 10 MB down 1 MB upload for 49.99 a month. But DSL has a static IP and Cable doesnt So it all depnds on whats availabe to you and where you live is the key as well. Remmber if you want faster downloads then Cable may be for you but for gaming hmmm. I beleave its the luck of the draw on where you live and whats available you might not be able to afford that DSL connection i mentioned but they have really good packages that you can get. Also go to Broadband Reports and do a serach on whats available to you in your area. That way you can see whats out thier. Well good luck on what you choose. Well I have Charter cable and it shorts out on me all the time. A few weeks back my internet was out for three dyas straight before it was fixed. And for Cable having better downloads, don't bet on it. My downstream tests on dslreports.com usually give me about 300kbs, and that's tops. Usually though I can get pings below 100 on most server so I can't complain.

Like stated b4. both have there ups and downs depending on where you live, what is available, how close you are to your telephones CO. what is the cap on your cable. Is your next door neighbor downloading 300 songs each hour,
For a consistent upload/download speed get DSL depending on how much you want to spend it may not be worth it. For top download / upload speed cable but can be effected by the other people on your segment. a little hint. have a younger brother go around the neighborhood unscrewing everyone's cable connection when you servering. ok that was a joke biggrin: On a side note, you can get other tiers of cable but you will never be guaranteed on an upload / download speed. Go figure. |
I just upgraded to a faster cable same IP but faster speeds.Up to 3.5Mbps/384Kpbsâ€* It costs me $95 a month ed:

I use DSL and have not had one problem. I get a 768/128 connection no matter the time of day or how many people are on the net. It cost me $50 bucks a month through Verizon.
While i was doing this same broadband debate all that i heard about cable was how un ealiable it was and how its speed awas effected by users. Well i hated that aspect. So i got DSL. I ping 110 to 150 ok UK servers from Washington state. Cable horror story: After being accpeted into the TIC one of its founding members began to have cable troubles. He would ping 500+ on a Seattle based server with 6 people on it. He live in Seatle like many of the TIC members. He eventually gave up on his crappy Cable service and while waiting for DSL played on a 56k modem that was faster than his cable service. Since receiving his DSL he has had no problems and pings are stunning. My vote go with DSL if you can get it at a good price. Also go to DSLreports.com and read some reviews of providers in your area. |
Rude said it the best "both have there ups and downs ".
Unfortunately, WE ARE ALL AT THE MERCY OF OUR LOCAL ISP!!!!! Yea read all you want about "cable is shared and DSL isnt", sorry but they are ALL shared, just depends on what point in the circuit its shared.. Its all a moot point because your provider is gonna oversell his bandwidth anyway!!! GUYS, go read this article it will tell you all about the oversubscribing by your ISP: http://bandwidthplace.com/tech/ The ISPs only figure that on the average only so many clients will be on their systems and so thats how they sell it. Kinda like how the airlines overbook their planes. The ISP doesnt want to see their expensive hi-bandwidth connections idle so they oversell them so they get more use (and we get crappy connections most the time!). If you have a great DSL or Cable connection and like to boast about one is better than the other, CONSIDER YOURSELF LUCKY!!!! and thats all, theres really not a big difference (now were talkin the basic service here, not the more expensive stuff). We have a number of cable providers here, some really suck, others are great. What it all boils down to is CHECK YOUR LOCAL PROVIDER CAREFULLY before you subscribe. Go to a neighbor that has the service and find out how it runs, test it http://bandwidthplace.com/ just to be sure. Some companies offer a lower bandwidth than others (and dont tell you uless you read the fine print). Many companies have eqipment problems and wont bother to fix them until enough people complain. I run a network for a company and have changed to 3 different ISPs so Ive had my share of dealing with these guys. CHECK YOUR LOCAL PROVIDER CAREFULLY !!!! |

Sig is a company that manafactures handguns, shotguns, and rifles. biggrin: Seriously, a sig is used in forums for reasons yet unknown. The biggest use for it is to give everybody more personallity. |
