how is this techinque done?
 
HOw does this guy get that darkened box with his name in it over his background? I bet its simple, but im just too stupid to realize how. All help = appreciated, thanks. [img]http://masterjim.orcon.net.nz/masterjim.jpg[/img]

Well, you start with your background. You add a new layer and draw a rectangle with the selection tool. Fill the rectangle with the paint bucket and set the layer's opacity to 25% or so. That's how you make the rectangle.

Then you place the text on top using the text tool and the drop shadow effect.

Ooh, I didn't notice the little notch in the bottom of the rectangle...

You might have to shag with erasing a bit of the regular rectangle to get that little notch in the bottom.

The notch in the bottom can easily be made with the polygon selection tool, and the rectangle is probably set to the Multiply blending mode to get the darkening like that.

That's the beauty of this kinda graphic design...there's several different ways to achieve the same thing.

I don't have a polygon selection tool in my graphics package, so I'd have to erase. It would look the same, but the technique is different.

yea this way is alot easier, for the eraser tool you have to have a really steady hand to make it look really smooth
