Apocalypse Now

I've seen quite a few war movies in my time but just only recently saw "Apocalypse Now". Is it just me or did this movie suck? I didn't like it all that much....way too weird for me. Who's gonna go surfing while being shot at?
I did watch the whole thing through hoping it would turn around but it never did. 3 hrs later and i was disappointed.

Another classic that i never quite saw all the way through is the "Deer Hunter". I'll be renting that one this week and this time, i'll watch the whole thing. I know it'll be better than Apocalypse Now.

Yeah Apocolypse now was way to wierd and really wasnt about the Vietnam war at all. This guy gets this crazy mission that they would noramlly sent SEALs or rangers to do and its like wtf? Deer Hunter was a ok movie.

weird I just paused on my dvd player to surf for a bit O_o but yeah the only part ive liked so far is when that air cav unit plays that classical music biggrin: who's the composer of that anyway ?

Slaggg 04-05-2003 06:30 PM

That would be 'Ride of the Valkyeries' I want to say DeBussey, but I know that wrong.

Slaggg 04-05-2003 06:31 PM

You guys are showing your age. Apocalypse Now is a classic.

Innoxx 04-05-2003 06:36 PM

Wagner did Flight of The Valkyres

Pyro 04-05-2003 06:39 PM

haven't seen it

saw The Great Escape on Bravo today, great movie.

Innoxx 04-05-2003 06:43 PM

I thought it was good, but I don't look for the usual "rambo takes out a division of NVA" kind of movie. Shows just how much a war can fuck you up.

Apocalypse Now isn't a really a war movie. I don't think Coppola was intending it to be. It's more of a festival film.

So you shouldn't watch iot expecting to see a whole lot of gung-ho bollocks. It's a very deep film, and for those that have the mental capacity to understand it, it's a truly great film.

I myself never got the hang of it, but I've heard other people describe it, and read Francis Ford Coppola's explanation for it. It's intending to take a very metaphorical and figurative view on war in general. That's where somebodies mental capacity and general knowledge of the world around them comes into play.

It's just one of those films that has to be understood on multiple levels....And only the Director can really fully understand it. Most Art House films fit that description anyways.
