Linux Users Come Here

Does anyone here have Linux installed?

do i just boot off of the cd's to install it?
is it hard to install, or use?
how long did it take you to get use to another OS?
do you have any links that could help me out with the install? or any other Linux problems i might have?

i have Mandrake 9-? on some cd's now.

You boot off the cd to install

It is a pain in the ass to run if you dont know what you are doing
there are no .EXE files to install stuff like drivers..you need to compile and run and install them yourself.

I have used Mandrake and Now have the wannabe WIndows linux distro called lindows...It makes it alot easier to run giving a similar interface to WinXP.

If you have never played with linux(like me) then you will find it hard to do much with it besided the basics...surf the net, write papers etc.

i use Red Hat 9....you can boot off the cd to install, it is very hard to install stuff on linux in general so i wouldnt recommend doing it right away, research some stuff.

Linux by far, wayyyyy more stable and really fun to use. a lot more freedom and better for servers. only reason i use windows is i can play games and watch videos on windows.

HOW is linux fun to use?

Nyck 02-09-2004 07:49 PM

which is better? linux is 1000000000000000000 times more stable

which is easier? windows by a mile...

I would love to have seen some of those dumb fuck who bought the Lindows PCs for liek 200 bucks at walmart..and then tried to install their casio games and elf bowling onto it only to find out that its impossible...the look on their face as they got lost in it would have been awesome

xXiMDisTuRB3DXx 02-09-2004 07:50 PM

Because it is total open sources...if something goes wrong with it you have hundreds of thousands of people working on a soulution for it.

Where as with windows...some fucking flaw or hole pops up and you have to wait 3 months for Microsoft to acknowledge the problem. Then another 2 months for their crack team to lick all the Jelly donut residue of their fingers before the 10 people who work on the problem fix anything.
then you wait a month to have them post it in windows update

he makes good points, but there are some other advantages.

say for some reason the system crashes or is corrupted (which rarely happens on linux) but say it did, and you have lost your linux cds, guess what?! you're not screwed like windows, you can get it for free, its open source. thats much better than paying 200 bucks for an operating system that updates every day and extremely unstable.

linux has better themes, more built in programs that are useful, like gaim, irc, mozilla, and other basic programs.

I learned how to use Red Hat's Valhalla distribution of Linux before any
other and I thought it was pretty easy, but then again I had experience
with command line operating systems and I learn everything very fast...

The CDs are usually bootable, provided your motherboard supports it. In
the event that it doesn't, you can boot from a floppy and go from there.
As for help material, you can go to http://www.linux.org/docs/index.html

Welcome ... to the real world.
