You think it wise to leave a broken fan in?
 

I was pleasently fiddling around with my computers insides when my thumb seemed to think it nice to touch the CPU fan. Indeed it did, also causing one of the fins of the fan to break off. Do you thinks its wise to just leave it like that? Its making a little more noise now, but you think one less fin will cause heat problems? Its an old k7 processor i think + it has a heatsink thingy. oOo:

I'd replace it a.s.a.p

If you hit it with enough force to knock a fin off the fan oOo: then you've probably damaged the fan enough for it to SELF DESTRUCT, SENDING SHRAPNEL FLYING ALL OVER THE PLACE POSSIBLY EVEN INTO YOUR SCROTAL SACK.

My dads got a P3 1.1 Ghz and I don't even think his fan works anymore lol...it just buzzes around in circles once in a while...but his computer still runs fine...

i'd replace that shit... if it broke that easy... like buttocks said, it could have serious ramifications...

My fan is so damn annoying...everytime I start up the computer it makes noise then like five minutes later it stops...maybe it stopped spinning I don't know...anybody know how to shut up a computer fan without breaking it?

Unplug all wiring including the power cord.
Remove outer cover.
Disconnect all power supply wiring.
Remove power supply
Open power supply cover and remove noisy fan.
Install new fan.
Reassemble in reverse order

speaking of fans, can anyone recommend a type of fan that is not just quite, but it whispers? i need one for the power supply, one for the back of the computer.

I've never replaced a fan in a power supply but just remember that those things hold a charge even when switched off, so if you're tinkering be really careful about where you stick your screwdriver/soldering iron/pen0r.

As for quiet fans, consider Vantec Stealth or better yet SilenX fans.

how's about you just break the fin off from the other side

that way the fan is balanced out and shouldn't make a funny noise :)

Well i guess ill eventually fix it..... knowing me it will probably be never. biggrin: I managed to tear off a little chunk of the fin that was left so now its smooth, reduced the noise. Im glad its a nice cheap plastic one and not a fancy metalic one, that woulda taken a nice part of my thumb. oOo:

The medium level Panaflo's are excellent.
