is there a way to get my xbox to read cd-r's without having to purchase a mod chip?

It depends on what hd you have. My old hd couldnt read them, then it got fucked up, I sent it in and they replaced it. And now my new one can.

naw dunno if same in usa but in uk when xbox dropped price they changed the dvd reader so the cheaper one will play cd-rs the best way to check is if ur tray has holes in then it'll read cd-r's if not then buy a cd-rw disk

the newer version xboxs with more holes through the cd tray play some cdrs fine.
