OK guys, I need your help (computer related)

I think I’m ready to purchase my new system. I have the monitor, keyboard and mouse, and all the software I’m going to need for it. What I need you guys to do is look over it for me and make sure everything looks good. If anything pops into your head, give it to me. I want to know what you guys think. I want your opinion. I don't care what it is. I want to make sure I cover every possible angle on this thing since I’m going to be spending a lot of money on this rig.

It will primarily be a gaming rig. I was originally going to go with the AMD 64 3200+ because it was $300 cdn. With that I was going to use the K8V SE-Deluxe 754 pin mobo, but then I realized that I was purchasing Dual Channel memory, and couldn't use it on this board. The only boards you can use it on are the 939 mobos. So I decided to go a step up to the 939. The mobo isn't really that much more, but the processor. The lowest processor for that board is the 3500+. It comes in for me at $480. That’s $180 more. The other thing I could do is just not get dual channel memory and stick with the 3200+ and 754 pin mobo. But then I also realized that there will be no new AMD chips for that board, since they switched over to the 939. So my thinking is that I get the 939 with the 3500+, and that way in the future if I want another processor, I can get one of the higher up amd's on the 939 board. If I stuck with 754, then the highest I would be able to go is 3400+. So does it make sense to pay the extra money for the 939 and 3500+?

The other thing I wanted to ask about was the IDE cables. I will have only 1 SATA hard drive and 1 E-IDE (ATAPI) DVD writer drive. So, I just need to go out and purchase one of each of those cables, plus one for the floppy, correct? I know the DVD comes with its EIDE, but I may want to jazz it up a bit. I know the SATA cable will work on the motherboard, but will the EIDE? Also, can I buy cables with room for 2 devices on it now, and if I get another drive later add on the second device for master and slave? Do SATA and EIDE cables come 2 devices ready? Also, I wrote down 1 Elite Serial ATA cable, 18 inches. Is this long enough to go from the hard drive to the mobo? I ask this because this case is pretty big. It's not a mid size case, it's pretty much a full tower. Is everything positioned the same as in a mid tower?

One final specific question would be, I’m keeping my old computer when I get my new one. I want to share internet on both of them but I don't want to pay for 2 high speed internet services. I suppose I’m talking about a network between two computers, correct? I don't really need to access each computer from the other computer, rather only share internet, and perhaps share a printer. I think there are wireless routers that can do this, are there not? Wireless would be best since the computers will be fairly far apart and on different floors. Can anyone show me a link or product or something on how to do this? Thanks.

Just a note on the cooling aspect. The case itself comes with 2 case fans already. I'll be purchasing 2 more as seen below, plus one for the processor and all that jazz. Just so you know there will be 4 case fans, not just the two you see me purchasing below.

Another note: I will be purchasing components from 2 different places. The majority of things will be bought locally in Calgary. ( http://www.memoryexpress.net/ ) 4 of the parts I will be purchasing from https://www.mocc.ca/

Those things are Processor, Motherboard, DVD Writer, and Hard Drive. They were cheaper there than at my local store, and I get free shipping. Those 4 things are marked with an asterisk, just so you know what that’s there for.

Here's my setup:
(Remember, prices are in Canadian Dollars)

What's the verdict? Am I missing anything?

Thanks! beer:

Your aiming for pretty high, when I shopped for my system I bought medium /top of the line, it wasent the latest and greatest but it wasent going to be out of date in 6 months either. The price was decent too. Its like anything, you pay more to have the latest and greatest. this mainly applies for the CPU and video card.

oh by the way, I have the a7n8x motherboard, havent had any problems with it so far so iv considered it a good choise. Im guessing yours is just the next level up.

Might want to try for a x800 pro "vivo" they can normally be bios flashed to x800xt.

Also zalman coolers are generally wank, built to look good and be quiet but do diddily shit for adequate cooling.

fujimi7su 08-26-2004 08:34 PM

western digital hard drives are crappy, and your paying too much for that one

other than that, not bad... although you could save money buying fans at a local store...

nice system

geRV 08-26-2004 08:42 PM

Regarding the cooler, from some reviews ive read the stock heatsink does a good job unless you're overclcoking, the 64 cpu's dont generate too much heat anyway. Might want to just use stock untill you feel the need to overclock then look at your options at the time.

some of the prices look a little high, shop around. Are you building this yourself or is a store doing it for you?

Short Hand 08-26-2004 09:11 PM

before you buy, build another system here first, with exact same parts and see which place will save you more money.

Other then that it looks fine. I have gone threw many WD HD's in many computers, I have never felt a problem with any.

I can get an x800 vivo for $614, but the place that has them is out of stock of all the X800's. I'm not buying right away this instant, so maybe some will come in and I'll see if i should get that one.

I always thought Zalman were pretty good. Anyway, i'll have to read some more reviews if I do get it.

WD is crappy? Aren't they the most popular brand?

Those fans are from a local store. They don't really have led's there for less than $20. I bought a fan for this comp ther last weekend. It was $15 for 80mm. THey ahd ones for $6, but I think i'll stay away from those.

I'm thinking that I may want to OC this baby. I'll have to decide for sure and see.

I ahev been for the past 3 weeks or so. I could find cheaper prices online from the states, but then i'd have to pay shipping and customs. This way, i'm buying locally, and pay no shipping. I'm pretty sure it'll end up being cheaper this way.

And i'm building it myself. All i'm doing here is it's just that the more opinions I hear from the better, right? Thats the way I see it. I'm going to ask as many people as I can to see if their opinions match mine, or if they don't, why they don't so I can see the point they are making in hopes of improving the rig.

For components that are exactly the same, I save only about $65 with that site. So it all depends on shipping.

Sgt>Stackem 08-27-2004 07:48 AM

I didnt notice you were in Canada, so its safe to assume you are quoting Canadian dollars as well. That would make the prices look better
