Im whipping up a Dream Theater sampler for a friend with fairly limited musical taste, basically whats on the local rock station.

what style of music are they?...

Dream Theater are a musician's band. Very athletic progressive metal is how I usually describe them

Odd time changes, extremely technical playing. Each member of the band is a goddamned prodigy. You'd be hard pressed to find a more technically perfect band.

It's not for everyone. Their tunes are complex, with extended instrumental sections and meanderings. Safe to say if you're looking for a radio-friendly two-and-a-half minute single, you won't find it on a DT record.
