Networking two computers
I have a question. I'm going to sell my old PC that I don't use anymore. But before I do I want to transfer some files like songs and pics to my new one. What is the easiest way to do this? I checked the files transfer wizard help section, but I just want an easy to follow directions in plain english.
Would I just use a USB cable and just hook the two together directly? Or do I need a hub or something? Thanks for any advise guys. |
PC#1 - NIC Card - RJ45 - NIC Card - PC#2
Make sure Clients for MS Networks, File and Printer Sharing for MS Networks and TCP/IP are set on both computers: also, they must be in the same Workgroup. You can see the other computer from Network Neighborhood: share folders and you're ready to go... |
if you want to just plug two computers into each other, use a crossover cable.

pull the hard drive from your one, slave it on your new pc, copy and paste away.
|
OR ... burn the files to CD biggrin:

email them? floppy disk or cd or flash drive? all those work well with holding and transferring files.

That's the best way to do it. |

a floppy disk is the worst invention ever stick data from one pc on to a floppy - try to read it on another pc and its corrupt cry: my USB memory stick is awesome (only 128meg) but its great for transfering files to and from college. |
If you plug a USB cable directly from one PC to another, you will cause some serious damage to both your systems. You need an actual USB file transfer cable, specially made for such a purpose.
Pulling the old HDD and whacking it in the new PC is the cheapest and most realiable way of getting files across. Do that. |
