If I buy 'Call of Duty' how do I play it online? Where do I go to play, do I have to pay a server? Can I just get some buddies and link by IP? Whats the best way to go about this. Free would be good, is that possible?

obvioiusly you need an internet connection (which i presume you have due to posting here) 128k+ is recommended as 56k lags the server.

in call of duty there is an ingame server list. This finds all servers from across the globe just double clicking will allow you to join the game.

may i advise you to get all seeing eye: http://www.udpsoft.com/eye/ - this is a great program for viewing servers.

Jeez, Everytime I post I'm told its in the wrong forum. Guess I hav'nt got a clue. I've been playing online for years just not these types of games (MSN Zone or IP) Thanks for the info.

Once installed you just click the 'CoD Multiplayer' shortcut, than once that is loaded and connected to the internet (it does it automatically) click 'Browse for Games' to access the in-game server list, where you simply click on a server to load and play.

No. All servers are free; other people pay to host a dedicated server, but since it's not your server, you can play on it all you want.

You would all have to join a server together. You could start your own server (on your own computer) but that would be hard on your computer (because it would have to run the server and everything + would have to let you play), or you could run a dedicated server (on another computer), but that would cost money (to rent a computer)...

So the best way to go about doing this would probably be joining the same server together on your seperate computers (I.E. Write down the IP of an ideal server and tell your friend that IP address)

As I said, MP is free to play. The only way it isn't is if you decide to rent your own dedicated server.
