To me, it looks like its "smushed" down for some reason.

it looks smushed because you didn't resize the image proportionally. If you are using Photoshop, resize the image by pressing Control+T then drag the corners while holding shift down, then it should resize both horizontally and vertically and keep the image in proportion

Coleman is right about this. Make sure you have the aspect ratio box clicked.
