White Sox Game 2

Anybody watch it and see the call in the 9th inning? I think the ball bounced a little on the ground when the glove goes around it. But anybody else see it and think different?

But yeah go Sox!

Go SOX! Indeed!

It was actually a little bit of the catchers error. I played catcher for 8 years and ANY time a ball is that close you always go up for the tag. The umpire made the best call he could from the position he had, so there's nothing the Angels can do but suck it up and get ready for game 3.

Yeah thats one of the times you wish you have instant reply. But I mean the ump's did a good job in my mind doing the best they can i mean you cant notice that small shit that far away.

Instant replay would ruin baseballs purity. I agree with Angels manager mike scoscia, in that replay could be used to judge a fair or foul homerun, or to rule on fan interference...

as far as the play, as a whitesox fan of course i will take it. a win is a win, and umpiring (close calls) has always been a part of this game.

AJ had a similiar play in the 2nd inning, when garret anderson had apparently struck out, so AJ threw it to third for around the horn...turns out he had foul tipped it. the point is that josh paul has to know better and tag Pierzynski out. if he tags him, this would not be an issue right now. it was very bush league of him to just assume that he caught it, it was VERY close...so he should know better that you tag the batter out just to be sure. contraversy on this play is a non issue as far as im concerned.

as johnny damon says, to win in the playoffs takes pitching, defense, timely hitting...and luck. sox definitely got a break here, lets see what we can do with it.

even though no wI want the White Sox to win the world series...I thought the call should of went to the Angels.

It's not the actual call itself in question, it's the fact that the umpire called strike 3, then called him out. In the replays you can see he indicated strike 3 then made a fist and called him out. I was watching the umpire meeting on tv and the umpire said "I didn't call him out but there's alot of noise in the stadium and blah blah" which was total bullshit. He STILL should have tagged him but the umpire goes 'out!' you presume you're in the clear.

All I can say it's lucky for the umpire it was a home game and not in California.

apparently you werent watching the same press conference i was. the umpire vehemenently denied that he made any verbal call at all. AJ also ran because he did not hear the umpire say anything.

if you were watching the replays i saw...you can see that the umpire raised his hand towards first base, which is his strike call....then he makes the out with his fist. this was also the correct call.

when a drop third strike happens, the strike is called first, then the out call. It is up to the catcher to either tag or throw it to first to complete the out. again i see no contraversy here, i never once heard the umpire backpeddle like you are claiming. noise? shit they had huge balls to come and take questions, usually the umps decline to comment after the game. perhaps they ran an edited version where you were watching. it was a close play, but i dont think it belongs in annals of baseball playoff history as a contraversial play. the right call was made here, hands down.

Airborne Butters 10-13-2005 03:04 PM

Your probally right. I only caught the jist of the confrence and was distracted watching Star Trek on picture in picture.

The fact was he CALLED the out. Regardless if the catcher could hear him or see him, he signaled to every other damn player on the field that he was out.

When I played ball, the umpire called strike 3 then I'd tag the batter and then he'd be called out. If he had tagged the batter then that'd be the 4th out? Not sure how that works.
