Having problems with new desktop
 

Well, I got all my parts today and put it together but have a problem. It boots up doesn't display video on my monitor and beeps repeatedly non-stop (could it be the video card?). I looked online and that result of that code was very vague.. it said it could either be my "system board, power supply or keyboard problem"
(Just to clarify a few things - all the jumpers are correct... and I've re-seated all my RAM and my video card to make sure they weren't un-seated or loose).

Geforce 7800 GTX 256mb
WD Caviar 250GB S ATA
2GB of Corsair 3200

Zap, are you saying you built this system from scratch? If so, make sure none of the mobo anchor pins aren't shorting out the mobo (happened to a friend of mine)

Also, recheck all your connections and cards. Does the video card require a power plug in?

Yes, I built it myself. Now I came to some what of a stand still. Whenever I plug in the 12v power supply connector it gives off beeps and doesn't display video... whenever I disconnect the 12v power it DOESNT give off beeps but it doesnt display video. I'm thinking that it's either the mobo or the video, I really don't know.

is this a fresh install of windows on the HD? or are you placing your HD with windows already installed on the HD into your new system?

Definitely sounds like a power issue.

Undo all of your wiring and redo starting from the mobo and working up.


Like Arkan said, it could be shorting out on an extra standoff or a screw that fell behind or something. Take it out of the case and try setting it up ontop of the mobo box.

What power supply do you have?

I know you said all jumpers are correct but make sure it's set to single card, not SLI.

Try using a single stick of RAM in different slots, sometimes mobos can be fickle like that.

Might want to try those last too before undoing all your wiring.

does your mobo have a post led? if so when it starts beeping what numbers doest it say, and look it up in your manual. it'll usually give you an idea of whats wrong.

Also the number of beeps and the length of them are usually researchable, and can give an idea of whats causing the problem.

Do you have 2 1GB sticks of RAM or 4 512 GB sticks for RAM? If its 4x512 try taking out 2 of the sticks and see what happens. My board (Abit AN8-SLi) is based on a similar chipset (Nforce 4) and it doesn’t like running the RAM at its rated speed with all 4 slots populated. Just a thought. Nother thought, pull all of the non-essentials out (CD/DVD drives, hard drive, floppy drive, USB stuffs, sound cards, modems, etc) and get it down to the minimum (keyboard, CPU, RAM, Motherboard, Case / Power Supply) start trouble shooting from there.

Mr. Glass, thanks man you were absolutly correct. Right now I'm on the computer, it works fine now, apparently I can't have all 4 RAM slots filled as you said, weird... is there a fix for this yet or what? Even though I have 1 gig I would like to make use of the other two sticks of RAM I bought lol. It was driving me insane, I tried EVERYTHING. Thanks allot man +1
